Ralph Merrill Obituary

LEAWOOD, Kan., -- Ralph M. Merrill, 80, of Leawood, Kans., passed away Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2004, in Kansas City, Mo. Mr. Merrill had been a resident of Leawood since 1973.

Mr. Merrill was born Nov. 5, 1924, in Fort Edward, the youngest of four children of Henry C. and Mary (Stott) Merrill.

He was a 1942 graduate of Fort Edward High School.

Following graduation, he became employed with AT&T.

Shortly thereafter, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps, where he served in Intelligence in South America for the duration of World War II.

Upon his return from the war in 1945, he resumed employment with AT&T.

Shortly thereafter, he met Edmay Richer, and they were married May 29, 1948. They had two children, Gary and Nancy.

He earned his B.A. in business from Russell Sage College of Troy in 1960. His employment with AT&T took the family to Albany, Harrisburg, Pa., New York City, Omaha, Neb., and ultimately to Kansas City. In 1984, he retired from AT&T. A few short years into retirement, he began working for H&R Block as a personal tax preparer and was looking forward to the upcoming tax season.

He enjoyed his involvement in the community, especially the Kiwanis Club. Ralph served as president for K of C Kiwanis Club, Missouri-Arkansas Division 4 as Lieutenant Governor and Missouri-Arkansas District as Governor. In addition to his involvement with Kiwanis Club, he gave generously of his time to the Ararat Shrine, to the Telephone Pioneers of America and to St. Peter's Episcopal Church.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Nancy Merrill.

Survivors include his wife

of 56 years, Edmay Merrill

of Leawood, Kan.; one son,

Dr. Gary Merrill of Burnt Hills; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation was held Sunday, Dec. 26, at McGilley State Line Chapel, in Kansas City, Mo.

A funeral Mass was conducted on Monday, Dec. 27, at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Kansas City, Mo.

Burial will be in the family plot at Union Cemetery in the town of Fort Edward, on Thursday, Oct. 27, 2005, at 5 p.m., with the Rev. Wayne Bowers, rector of the Zion Episcopal Church, officiating.

A reception will follow the burial.

Arrangements are under the direction of Carleton Funeral Home, Inc., 68 Main St. in Hudson Falls.
