Richard Record Obituary

CAMBRIDGE Richard F. "Dick" Record, 68, died unexpectedly at his home on South Union Street, on the morning of Tuesday, July 15, 2008. He was outdoors, splitting wood, when he was overcome by a fatal heart attack. A Cambridge native, Dick was born at Mary McClellan Hospital on Sunday, Sept. 3, 1939, the second child of Donald Bernard and Ruth Evelyn Baker Record. He grew up in "Bucktown," aka Academy Street, and graduated from Cambridge Central School, Class of 1959. After receiving an associate degree from Cobleskill State College, he returned to Cambridge, served in the Vermont National Guard and worked for several years at the Cambridge Lumber Yard. On Aug. 1, 1964, he married his high school sweetheart, Linda McMorris Record. In 1966, Dick began a career that brought him into the homes and businesses of many, many people in southern Washington County. It was that year that he purchased Faile's Dairy and became the beloved milkman. Two years later he purchased Pemrick's Dairy and added their customers to his route. It is impossible to count the quarts of milk that were delivered and the number of friendships that were formed in those 37 years. Dick said that he measured his business success not in terms of dollars, but in friendships. He made his final milk run on July 11, 2003. Dick said that he didn't miss the route but missed interacting with his customers. When business changed at the Dairy, Dick became a part-time school bus driver for Cambridge Central School. He became a full-time driver after his retirement from the milk supply business. Along with running his own business, Dick was very involved in the Cambridge community. He was a member and trustee of the Cambridge Baptist Church; a member of the Cambridge Volunteer Fire Department for 32 years; Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop No. 62 for 36 years; had his pilot's license and flew with the Cambridge Valley Flying Club and was very involved in the Cambridge Alumni Association. Dick served on the Cambridge Central School Building Committee for many projects, including the science wing and the new bus garage. At the present time he was the president of CSEA at CCS and enjoyed presenting scholarship awards each year at graduation. A humble man, Dick did not expect recognition but was presented with many community awards. Besides spending much of his time with his family, Dick loved the outdoors and caring for animals. He also enjoyed watching the skies and was fascinated with astronomy. Along with his wife of 43 years he is survived by four children: Deborah L. Record of Cambridge, Richard T. Record and fiancée, Brooke Thomas, of Wilton, Donald E. Record and fiancée, Julie McGuire, of South Glens Falls and Christopher S. Record of Clifton Park; a granddaughter, Danielle Record of Cambridge; three siblings: Donald L. Record and Dolores "Dee" Romack, both of Cambridge and Joyce Sellers of Winchester, Mass.; his father-in-law, Edwin T. McMorris and wife, Elizabeth, of Troy; a brother-in-law, Thomas McMorris of Salem; a sister-in-law, Ann Cassidy of Bayville, N.J.; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. A service to remember and honor the life of Richard F. Record will be held on Saturday, July 19, 2008 at 10 a.m. at the Cambridge United Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Paul Baker, a personal friend, officiating. At Dick's request, there will be no calling hours. The family suggests memorial donations be made to either the Cambridge Volunteer Fire Department, Cambridge, NY 12816; the Cambridge Baptist Church or the Cambridge Valley Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 52, Cambridge, NY 12816. Arrangements are under the direction of Ackley & Ross Funeral Home, Cambridge.

Dear Linda and family,
I remember as a little boy meeting Dick Record when he helped Dad on the farm. Dick was in high school at the time. He always made me smile, and every time I saw him, even at our last meeting, I always thought "what a great guy". I am sure there are a lot of folks in heaven today saying the same thing, and smiling as he joins them. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Ole' Dicky was more than a a great joke teller who could make you smile like you were a kid all over again. one of the best story tellers when it came to telling of his younger days. He was a more like a father that you would want to idolize when you get older... ill never forget his stories of chasing carts from IGA as he would watch fromhis front porch and walk them back when the wind would only push another... I will miss his friendly "Well Hello Thier Young Man" in his signature hello

Being just off the phone with Linda, a couple words need to be said:
I look at people in the way "they" look at and treat other's. Need I say more. Dick was true from the inner core to the outter edges of humanity. A funny man, a man loving to share stories and a few jokes along the way, and a man with a smile on his face to all. Cambridge is a small town and we all know each other and everyone, everyone knew Dick. Dick knew all, with no phoniness. A friend he was to me. That just about says it all.

Having left Cambridge in the 1960s, I did not see Dick again until recently sitting in the stands at a CCS football game. He was the same friendly, self effacing "bucktowner" I remember growing up and playing football with. After chatting with him and Linda over the course of several football games it became obvious that he embodied the values we all aspire to. The boys who were his scouts were fortunate to have Dick exemplifying scout values, let them carry on his example. Cambridge is honored to have had Dick as one of its sons. Linda and family may you find peace and comfort in the knowedge of the good will he spread and continues to encourage.

As Cambridge Troop 62 Scoutmaster for 36 years Dick was a positive influence on hundreds of young men. He tought them outdoor skills and the love of nature, but more imortantly - through his actions - Dick taught these young men timeless values, leadership skills and citizenship lessons they will use their entire life. Dick truely lived the Scout Oath and Law and he will be sorely missed by Cambridge and the Scouting community.

A "Cambridge Icon" and one of the good guys. That says it. My condolences to the entire family. I too share wonderful memories of Dick coming to our home to deliver milk and bringing us chocolate milk. I will always remember his wonderful easy laugh and joke for all. He will be sorely missed.

The Cambridge community has lost one of its finest role models. Dick lived his life everyday the only way he knew, as a sincere and honest man, a loving husband, a supportive father and as a loyal friend. One does not encounter an individual with such integrity often and I feel fortunate to have shared the visits, laughs and stories with this special man. Peace to you, my friend.

Linda and Family,
We have such fond memories as everyone else does of Dick. There wasn't a delivery to us or CJ's parents that Dick didn't take the time to sit and chat for awhile. When our son, now 15 was small, he couldn't get it that the "milk man's" name was Dick,,,and insisted on calling him "Dick-man". At each delivery he would give the kids chocolate milk. We will forever miss Dick. I know for a fact your family has many great memories to hang on to. Let those memories carry you through this most difficult time. With great fondness to all of you,
CJ and Wendy Hayes
