Robert O'Connor Obituary

Robert O'Connor

Jan. 3, 1951 - June 8, 2023

QUEENSBURY - Robert O'Connor, 72, of Queensbury, passed away on Thursday, June 8, 2023 at Glens Falls Hospital.

Born January 3, 1951 in Glens Falls, the son of the late Harold O'Connor and Rita (Laney) O'Connor-Frasier.

He was a graduate of Glens Falls High School, Class of 1969. Bob always loved animals and when he was young, he enjoyed helping his father who raced horses at the Saratoga Harness Track and started working at the animal hospital at age 16. It was this love of animals that made him attend Cornell University and go on to earn his Bachelor Degree and his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) in 1976.

Following graduation, he returned home to begin his career with the Glens Falls Animal Hospital. In 1984, he purchased the animal hospital and went on to put on an addition in 2012. Bob was proud to own and operate the business and keep the hospital a local family owned practice.

It was here that he met his future bride, Doris Newton and on September 22, 1979, they were married, went on to raise three children, work alongside each other and enjoyed 43 years of marriage.

He was a member of the NYS Veterinary Medicine Society, and Co-founder of Northway Animal Emergency Clinic.

He enjoyed coaching Glens Falls Little League and Adirondack Youth Hockey and spending hours on his tractors while working on the lawn. However, Bob considered his greatest accomplishment to be his children and their families. He loved them all so much and it gave him much happiness spending time with them, whether he and Doris were watching them after school, playing sports, performing in concerts or just having dinner together.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his half sister, Sandy Mannarino and her husband, Jock.

Survivors include his loving wife, Doris of Queesnbury; his daughter, Sarah (Tyler) Herrick, of Queensbury; his son, Matt (Kasey) O'Connor, of Queensbury; his son, Kevin (Lindsay) O'Connor, of Saratoga; and his grandchildren: Grace Herrick, Ben Herrick, Abby Herrick, Emerson Herrick, Nolan O'Connor, Keegan O'Connor, Declan O'Connor and Colin O'Connor. He is also survived by his brother, Mike (Brenda) O'Connor, of Delafield, WI; his sister, Patty (Joe) Kervin of Queensbury; his brother, John (Heather Havens) O'Connor; a very special aunt, Harriet Rogers (aunt Boo); and several nieces and nephews.

Family and friends may call from 5:00-8:00 p.m. on Friday, June 16, 2023 at The Queensbury Hotel, 88 Ridge Street, Glens Falls.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the School District Foundation of Glens Falls, Inc., with attention to the Robert O'Connor Scholarship Fund, 7 Pershing Road, Queensbury, NY 12804.

Bob cherished all the wonderful friendships he and Doris have made throughout the years and the family thanks them for all the support they have shown them during this difficult time.

Arrangements are under the care of the Singleton Sullivan Potter Funeral Home, 407 Bay Road, Queensbury and those who wish may make online condolences by visiting our website at sbfuneralhome.com.

When my first dog Frak died I was a basket case. Dr. Bob called me at an early time to tell me he had died. I went right to the VET AND HE HAD BEEN COVERED WITH A BABY BLANKET AND i SPENT TIME WITH HIM. Dr. Bob came in gave me a hug and showed great empathy. Thus He became our vet and friend until his retirement. God bless you. Sheryl

We extend our deepest condolences on the passing of Robert O'Connor . Dr Bob was our veterinarian for our 4 Chow-Chows. He was not only a wonderful man who cared for the animals he treated ,but also showed great compassion and care for their human companions also. Our last Chow Momo was quite a handful from the beginning ,but with Dr Bob everything was alright with Momo. It's fascinating how animals can instinctively recognize their true friends . Momo loved Bob!

We will truly miss Dr Bob . May his soul soar alongside the animals he dedicated his life to caring for !
Dr Bob you will forever remain in our hearts

Can't even accept that our beloved Dr Bob is gone. He has helped me so much through the years with my job and my pets. A couple years ago, I had a laying hen break her leg. I took her to Dr Bob and he put a splint on her leg for me. He said "I never worked on a chicken before!" I told him it would look good on his resume! In true Bob fashion, he didn't charge anything for the work he did. A couple weeks later, I brought him a couple dozen eggs and a roaster from the freezer that I had raised. He said " This isn't the patient is it!!" I told him it's just like the old days when Drs got paid in eggs and chickens!!! He was the kindest, best person ever!! Miss him already and forever

Dr. Bob built a wonderful practice with caring professionals. We have always received excellent care at GFAH for our animals and by extension, us.
Through the years we had many visits but one highlights how amazing Dr. Bob was - we had an old labrador and we could not figure out her ailment over several visits. On one visit we got Dr. Bob and he took her for an x-ray. He carefully watched her and specifically her eyes when he turned her and diagnosed her with vertigo. After she was treated she was back to her old self and is fine to this day. His care for her still means the world to us.
We send our thoughts to his extended family and all at GFAH.

Colleen Hagadorn

June 13, 2023

Dr. Bob was truly a wonderful person and he took care of my fur babies for 30+ years. He always impressed me with his quick ability to identify whatever ailment was presented. I will never forget the time he scared me beyond words when I went to him with my black lab who had a tail problem. Bob looked at Riley, went to a binder, flipped through several pages without saying a word for what seemed to be an eternity, but was probably less than a minute. Since I had never seen Bob look anything up (he was so incredibly knowledgeable), I thought Riley had some rare disease. Bob took out a piece of paper from the binder and closed the book. He handed me the paper and simply relayed to me that Riley had " swimmer´s tail". Once I knew it was treatable, I laughed and told him "you scared the daylights out of me!" I trusted him implicitly. I will miss him very, very much. Thinking of all of his family members and colleagues.

B"H - It with great sadness that I learn of the passing of our trusted friend , and dearest Veterinarian Dr Bob , Dr Robert O´Connor , DVM . We found Dr Bob more than a skilled , compassionate, exceptional clinician, diagnostician, surgeon. We found him to be a caring person who listened to someone´s concerns, and through his skilled staff tried his utmost to provide the best possible treatment, care , and service with compassion for his patients he possibly could. We will miss him greatly. As he finds his way to that rainbow bridge , I am sure he will find many dear souls there to greet him with appreciation, and love as we do in his departure. May G-d Almighty bless his family, and staff as they start to grieve their loss. May his memory be for a blessing . Z"l . My sincere sympathies, Dr Mitchell Cohen ( human to a number of the good doctor´s patients ) .
