Rudolph A. Mason
May 30, 1948 - October 10, 2025
Rudolph A. Mason, 77, passed away on Friday, October 10, 2025 at Sunnyview Rehabilitation Hospital in Schenectady, N.Y. following a short illness.
Born May 30, 1948 in St. Albans, Vt., he was the son of the late Roger and Ruby (Shedd) Mason.
Rudy graduated from Pottersville Central School in 1966 and was drafted into the Navy in 1968. He proudly served his country aboard the USS Roosevelt deployed to the Mediterranean Sea as an Aviation Electronics Technician. He was also proud member of VF-84 (Fighter Squadron 84), nicknamed the Jolly Rogers. By the time he was honorably discharged in December of 1972, he had received the National Defense Service Medal for serving during the Vietnam War, the Navy Good Conduct Medal, and he was Sailor of the Month and Jolly Roger of the Month multiple times.
Rudy was employed by General Electric in Fort Edward for almost 38 years. During his career there he held various positions and made many lifelong friends. He retired in June of 2010.
Rudy liked to stay active, whether it was as a referee for high school girls' basketball and field hockey, meeting friends for breakfast, or gardening. He had a soft spot for his elders and routinely drove a shuttle of senior citizens to their appointments.
Survivors include the love of his life, wife Sylvia (Rovelli) with whom he shared 20 years of laughs and mutual adoration; his daughter Sutton Wemple and her husband Mark of Niskayuna; his brothers, Randy Mason of Minerva and Robert Mason of Chestertown; his sisters, Roxy Freeburn of North River, Rhoda Mason of Hudson Falls, Regina Raymond of Queensbury, and Rhea Greene of Corinth; as well as his grandchildren, Leah Crannell of Fort Wayne, IN and Harrison Crannell of Brooklyn, NY. He is also survived by his daughter, Dana Mason and his son, Brice Mason, with whom he wished things could have been different. He also leaves many nieces and nephews and friends and neighbors who will cherish the memory of his playful nature and his encouraging, positive outlook on nearly any subject.
Rudy prided himself on being a great patriot, flying his US flag with devotion every morning and religiously bringing it in each night. He never missed an opportunity to thank a veteran and often insisted on paying for their groceries or gas when he spotted them in uniform.
He had many interests and they were always evolving; he enjoyed hunting, was an avid reader (mysteries and Stephen King), loved researching new varieties of dahlias, building wooden models, cooking and baking, and painting. His sense of humor and knack for punny jokes will be missed at every gathering.
At Rudy's request there will be no calling hours. Arrangements are in the care of the M.B. Kilmer Funeral Home, 82
Broadway, Fort Edward, NY 12828.
Interment with military honors will take place at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, October 23, 2025 at the Gerald BH Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, 200 Duell Rd, Schuyerville, NY 12871.
Memorial Donations in Rudy's memory can be made to the Adirondack Vets House, 26 Pine Street, Glens Falls, NY
12801.
