Ruth Comstock Obituary

Ruth Monson Comstock

Dec. 30, 1919 - May 21, 2021

SOUTH GLENS FALLS - Ruth Monson Comstock passed away peacefully on May 21, 2021 at the age of 101 at The Pines in Glens Falls. She had been at The Pines since the end of August 2020 after suffering a fall at home. What she enjoyed most was a glass of wine, some dark chocolate and watching Judge Judy.

Ruth was born December 30, 1919, residing at 94 North Oraton Parkway, East Orange, NJ, the daughter of Chiropractor Axel Edward Eckstrom from Lund, Sweden and Ivah Ferrier whose family emigrated from Gladstone, Manitoba.

Excelling in school, she graduated 3rd in her class of 537. She was an avid reader, loved crossword puzzles and a was great speller with a wonderful vocabulary. In school she participated in ballroom dancing, later attended Bucknell University, and graduated from Katharine Gibbs Secretarial School. Ruth could type 60 words a minute, which was an asset when she later worked with her husband in his insurance agency.

On April 18, 1948 she married honorably discharged Marine Captain John Comstock after he had spent three years in the South Pacific. The couple lived in Rockford, IL, Kansas City, MO, Syracuse, Guilderland, and finally South Glens Falls first on Prospect St. and then Clark St. They were married 59 years before John passed in 2007. Together they had two sons, Jim and Keith, whom she loved very much.

From 1953 until 1961 the family enjoyed summers at Moreau Lake usually for the month of July, before it was purchased by the state and became a park. The first year they lived in the cabin in September there was a record-breaking heat wave, with temperatures up to 100 degrees. Ruth and John played golf at the Tee Bird for many years, bowled in a league and played duplicate bridge at which she exceeded. After John found a leftover ball at the bowling alley and gave it to her, she bowled a 208! She even managed to get a hole in one on the golf course. With a love for bridge, she continued to play and often win until she was 100. Ruth and John were able to travel, taking vacations in California, Florida, North Carolina, Hawaii, and England.

She was an inactive member of the Hospital Guild, a member of the Civic Club and a member of the Methodist Church. As a gardener, she planted vegetables and added to her perennial flowers regularly. She was quite proud of the fact that she had a driver's license for 75 years without a mark on it and never an accident, until a young driver cut her off and ran into her on Glen St., no one was hurt.

In her later years, Ruth loved having her two great-granddaughters, Genevieve and Vivienne, come over to visit. She enjoyed watching them perform dances, swim, and telling them "you're perfect!" every visit. She even joined them for a swim in her pool at least once every summer up until she was 100. She also looked forward to spending time with her 115 lb. great-grand dog, Moose, who she always said was allowed to sit on her lap whenever he wanted.

Her devoted son, Keith, assisted her in her everyday life and made it possible for her to stay in her own home up until her unexpected fall last summer. She looked forward to having a Manhattan and watching Jeopardy with him every evening and their trips to Massie's for dinner every Saturday. She always said she didn't know what she would do without her "Keithy Weithy".

She is survived by her son Jim, his wife Judy of Wilton; their daughter Army First Lieutenant Callie and husband Scott Winchell presently of Phenix City, AL; also a son Keith, his wife Barb of Hudson Falls; their son Kenneth and daughter Katie, her husband Brad Watkins of Hudson Falls and their two children Genevieve and Vivienne. Ruth was predeceased by her brother Richard Eckstrom and his wife Cynthia of Guildford, CT.

The family would like to thank the staff at The Pines, especially the 4th floor where she was affectionately called "Ruthie". Thank you for all you did, you made her feel as comfortable and at home as she possibly could throughout her time there.

Per Ruth's request, there will be no calling hours, service and burial will be private and at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are in the care of M.B. Kilmer Funeral Home, 136 Main Street, South Glens Falls, NY 12803. To post online condolences and view Ruth's Book of Memories, please visit kilmerfuneralhome.com.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the South Glens Falls Marathon Dance, 42 Merritt Road, South Glens Falls, NY 12803.

This is a beautiful tribute to a beautiful lady. Mrs.C. is definitely in heaven watching over all of you. So many good times at the pool, & even in the last few years she remembered me! She will be missed but not forgotten. Prayers for you all & love, Diane

For over a half century, we were neighbors on Clark Street. Clark street was an "everybody knows everybody" community within itself. It's always disheartening to learn that one of the pillars of our community has passed. My condolences to the family, friends and neighbors.
