Sheila Rice Obituary
Sheila B Rice
January 24, 1935 - May 17, 2025
Sheila Badger Rice, beloved wife and mother passed away peacefully in her home on May 17, 2025.
She was 90 years old and for only ten days was the widow of Richard A Rice who died on May 7, 2025. Sheila and Richard had been married for 71 years.
Sheila was born in Malone, N.Y. and graduated high school in Ticonderoga, N.Y. It was a New Year's Eve when she met the love of her life Richard Rice and later married him in 1954 at Episcopal Church of the Cross, Ticonderoga.
Sheila was the mother of four children and when the youngest was in high school, she earned her degree in computer programming from Genessee Community College, Batavia, N.Y. Richard's job later brought them to settle in Talbott, Tenn. and it was in Knoxville that Sheila landed her dream job as the Cathedral Bookshop manager for the Episcopal Diocese of East Tennessee, a position that combined three of her interests: books, spirituality, and computers.
Sheila was a third generation Episcopalian where she happily practiced her faith both behind the scenes and in leadership positions and working on projects to help others. As such, she completed the four year extension course from University of the South in Sewanne called Education for Ministry.
To say she was an avid reader is an understatement, always looking for the plot twist she could not foresee.
In their hearts her family will always treasure the memories of summer gatherings in the Adirondacks. By the shores of Lake George our parents passed down their love for each other, family, hiking, swimming, boating and sweet corn. The rest of the year a family celebration or a warm hug could always be found in their home in East Tennessee.
Sheila also enjoyed genealogy research (25 year member of the Samuel Doak Chapter, NSDAR), gardening, bird watching, listening to bagpipes, and collecting antiques.
Sheila is predeceased by her husband, Richard A Rice; her parents, James A Badger and Henrietta Wilson Badger; and sisters, Marcia Badger, and Dorcas Liberty.
Sheila is survived by two sons, Mark Rice of Richland, Wash. and Eric Rice (Maria) of Casselberry Fla. Two daughters, Carolyn Dean (Jerry) of Morristown, Tenn. and Marlene Super (Gary) of Westport, N.Y. Four grandchildren, Sarah Grace Dean of Morristown, Tenn., Chloe Super of St. Louis, Mo., Sophia Super (Alec) of Washington, D.C., Erica Lindsey (Jacob) of Knoxville, Tenn.; and great-grandchild, Isaac Lindsey; along with several nieces and nephews.
Sheila will be greatly missed by all her many friends and family who loved her dearly.
A Celebration of Life for both Sheila and Richard will be held at All Saints' Episcopal Church, Morristown, Tenn. time and date TBA.
In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the All Saints' Music Program.
