Thomas Remsen Obituary

Thomas E. Remsen

HUDSON FALLS - Thomas E. Remsen, the son of Judge Thomas C. and Elizabeth Hawkins Remsen, was born on September 21, 1949, at the Glens Falls Hospital. Thomas is the third of three children. He was a lifelong resident of Hudson Falls and had a love of trains and public service to the community.

Thomas graduated from Hudson Falls High School in 1967 and first attended the University of Tennessee at Knoxville for a year before transferring to Jamestown College in Jamestown, N.D., where his major was business administration and transportation. He graduated in 1972 and returned to Hudson Falls. Prior to graduation, Thomas worked as a deckhand on The Mohican at the Lake George Steamboat Company and as a brakeman on the Delaware & Hudson Railroad. This was during the summer months spent at home.

Upon graduation, Thomas attained employment with the NYSDOT, highways and canals. He married Mary Maille in 1973. Shortly after his marriage he attained employment for eight years with AMTRAK, until he attained employment with Niagara Mohawk.

While at Niagara Mohawk, he worked as a laborer, meter reader, hydroelectric employee, a gas mechanic, and then the service department. He worked with National Grid for 23 years before retiring in 2004. Upon retirement he was a service helper B. Upon his retirement from National Grid, Thomas worked for the Battenkill Railroad and for the Upper Hudson River Railroad as a conductor/brakeman during the summer months. He was doing something he truly loved and it brought out the child in him.

Thomas was in the Hudson Falls Volunteer Fire Department since 1967 serving as the first safety officer, a captain, and as a lieutenant, and was a lifelong member of the Fort Edward Rescue Squad since 1971. These were his major contributions to the village.

Thomas was predeceased by his parents, Judge Thomas C. and Mrs. Elizabeth Hawkins Remsen; his sister, Kathryn Remsen Davis; and his son, Thomas "TR" R. Remsen.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Maille Remsen; his daughter, Kimberly; and his golden retriever, Lady.

Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, September 17 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Carleton Funeral Home on 68 Main Street, Hudson Falls.

The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at the Church of St. Mary's/St. Paul's, 11 Wall Street, Hudson Falls on September 18, at 11 a.m. A reception will be held at The American Legion Post #574 on 72 Pearl Street, Hudson Falls from 12 to 4 p.m.
