Thomas Shevlin Obituary

Thomas John Shevlin

September 27, 1970 - September 22, 2024

GLENS FALLS - Thomas "Tom" John Shevlin, a native of Glens Falls, NY, passed away at his home in Rehoboth Beach, DE, on September 22, 2024, just a few days shy of his 54th birthday. Tom was a beloved figure in his community and among his extensive network of family, friends, and colleagues.

Tom was born at Glens Falls Hospital on September 27, 1970. He was the fourth child of the late George Felix Shevlin III and Linda Lee Shevlin (née Owens). He was named after his great-grandfather, Thomas Darwin Owens of Fort Ann, NY. The family home was located at 10 Raymond Avenue and Tom and his family were devout members of St. Mary's Catholic Church of Glens Falls. It was there that Tom was baptized on November 15, 1970, with Patrick J. and Doris Burke (née Case) of Glens Falls serving as his godparents; received his first holy Communion on May 5, 1979; and received the Sacrament of Confirmation on May 7, 1987, with Donald F. Whiting serving as his sponsor.

Tom proved to be an outstanding student and scholar. He attended Jackson Heights Elementary School and graduated from Glens Falls High School in 1989. In high school, he was routinely on the honor roll and received numerous awards and honors including the American High School Mathematics Contest Award, the Presidential Fitness Award, Regents Scholarship, Hess Scholarship, and a New York State Elks Association Lodge No. 81 Scholarship. As a member of the Boy Scouts of America, Tom achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in 1988, and in 1989 was recognized as "Eagle Scout of the Year" by the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution. Tom was a violinist, and he participated in the Glens Falls High School Orchestra and in a number of regional competitions.

Tom continued his education at the State University of New York (SUNY) at Geneseo, graduating Magna Cum Laude in 1994 with a dual Bachelor's degree in Spanish and Economics. While matriculating at SUNY Geneseo, he spent a year studying in Spain, was awarded the Omicron Delta Epsilon award for Outstanding Graduate in Economics, and inducted into the Golden Key, Tau Zeta, and Omicron Epsilon Honor Societies. Then he went to graduate school at Pennsylvania State University, where he was awarded a Master's degree in Economics in 1997.

Tom went on to have an illustrious career as an International Economist. In 1996 he accepted a U.S. Civil Service position as an economist at the U.S. Bureau of Standards to work on the Producer Price Index. In June of 1998, he transferred to the International Affairs Division of the U.S. Treasury Department, where he served as support staff to Treasury Secretaries Robert Rubin (1995–1999), Larry Summers (1999–2001), Timothy Geithner (2009–2013), and other Treasury officials. His assignments included assisting in the management of the financial market crises of the late 1990s-providing daily market briefings and feedback on market strategy to the Secretaries and senior staff-and providing the analytical basis for Brazil's communication strategy during the 1998–1999 currency crisis. In 1999, he received the Lawrence R. Klein Award, which honors the best articles appearing in the Bureau of Labor Statistics' Journal, the Monthly Labor Review. In 2000, he was appointed Deputy Financial Attaché for Europe at the U.S. Consulate in Frankfurt, Germany, where he represented the U.S. Treasury Department and the Federal Reserve to all German and European economic agencies, and gathered intelligence on behalf of the United States on European economy and financial markets.

In January 2003, Tom was reassigned to the Office of Quantitative Analysis within the Department of the Treasury in Washington, DC, where he is best remembered for having won a 98 percent debt reduction for Iraq from the Paris Club-a group of major creditor countries aiming to provide a sustainable way to tackle debt problems in debtor countries.

After 10 distinguished years of federal government service, Tom took the leap to the private sector, where he would become an experienced and well-respected portfolio manager. Over the course of the next 15 years, he would hone his expertise in portfolio and risk management and asset allocation at MIO Partners, Inc. (a subsidiary of McKinsey & Partners) in New York City (2005–2014) and Liberty Mutual Investments in Boston, MA (2014–2020). For the past few years, he worked as an independent analyst/manager. He was certified as a Financial Risk Manager (FRM) and was a Chartered Financial Analyst.

But Tom was not all work and no play. In addition to his passion for economics and geopolitics, he had an impressive voice, loved to sing, and was often volunteered to sing at family gatherings, such as his parents' 50th Wedding Anniversary celebration and his brother George's annual St. Patrick's Day parties. He was a world traveler and kept in touch with friends on many continents. He enjoyed collecting antiques and first edition books. He loved the beach, and Rehoboth Beach weaved in and out of his life. Tom was a member of beach group houses in Rehoboth for many years until his brother George bought a house there where Tom would visit for summer vacations, spend holiday celebrations with his family, and eventually move into. More recently, he loved spending time with his nephew, Paddy, and nieces: Genie and Biddy, and was especially helpful with their piano lessons and practice. He was a great uncle. He will be sorely missed.

In addition to his parents, Tom was predeceased by several aunts and uncles and a favorite cousin, Jeanne Marie Leroux.

Tom is survived by his brothers and sister: George Felix Shevlin IV and his husband, Peerapol Jack Suwanlert of Washington, DC, and Rehoboth Beach, DE, James Owen Shevlin and his companion, Michelle Sinéad Walshe of Frostburg, MA, and Marianne "Mame" Shevlin of Glens Falls, NY. He also leaves behind his nephew and godson, Patrick "Paddy" Kul Shevlin; along with nieces: Brigid "Biddy" Frances Shevlin and Regina "Genie" Ann Shevlin. Tom was also cherished by his three aunts: Norine Owens Sherman, Beverly Owens Underwood, and Kay Owens Goldman; as well as his special cousins: Jason and Ryan Turcotte and Sarah Turcotte Vega. His best friend, Dean Lopez, along with numerous other friends, will also feel his absence deeply.

My heart goes out to you Tom, you were such a strong, determined, beautiful Person. You were unapologetically yourself, and I loved that about you. We shared many great talks, and many great laughs. I love and miss you dearly. My condolences to your family.
