Tommy Hanneford Obituary

SARASOTA, Fla. -- The renowned showman Tommy Hanneford, of the famous family of circus equestrians who thrilled audiences for many years, died after a short illness in Sarasota, Fla., on Monday, Dec. 5, 2005, while in the hospital. He was 78.

The patriarch of the Royal Hanneford Circus known both locally and nationwide had early roots here in Glens Falls. Tommy as a youngster along with his brother, George and younger sister, Kay attended classes at the Little Red School House and many times they could be seen working with their horses on Hanneford Road. Since that time his family of performers were featured in all the great circuses.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Struppi; a brother, George Jr. of Myakka City; two nieces, Nellie Hanneford-Poema and Kathy Hanneford; and a nephew, George Jr. all of Sarasota, Fla.; and locally a cousin, Gracie Hanneford of Queensbury, who is the surviving daughter of Tommy's famed uncle and mentor, Edwin "Poodles" Hanneford.

Tommy Hanneford's passing will be a great loss to both the Circus Industry and fans everywhere, his circus will continue in the future.

Viewing hours were held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Toale Brothers Funeral Home, Colonial Chapel, 40 Orange Avenue, Sarasota, Fla.
