Grace Hanneford Obituary

QUEENSBURY * Grace E. Hanneford, passed away on Sunday, Dec. 17, 2006, at Glens Falls Hospital after a brief illness.

Born in New York City, she was the daughter of Edwin "Poodles" Hanneford, renowned circus clown and Grace N. (White) Hanneford.

Ms. Hanneford performed as a bareback rider for various circuses over several decades, with her parents and cousins. She played at the Hippodrome in the 1930s and later she moved to Hollywood where she was the stunt double as a bareback rider for Judy Garland, among other roles.

She lived many years in

the Lake George area, where she became an active parishioner at St. James Episcopal Church, serving on the Altar Guild and as a vestry member. She was also a member of the Glens Falls Hospital ladies auxiliary.

She was predeceased in death by her parents and her first cousins, Ernestine and Tommy Hanneford.

Survivors include several cousins, her friends and fellow parishioners at St. James Church, and her many circus fan friends who wish her Godspeed on her journey to that Big Top in the sky.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 21, 2006, at Pine View Cemetery, officiated by the Rev. Julie McPartlin.

I have many memories of Grace! We were talking about her recently and how she would love our three year old miniature poodle! Gracie lived up the road from us and came in our store almost every day. She was a treasure.

I have many memories of this wonderful lady. She was a neighbor of ours for many years on Hanniford Rd. East side Lake George. She visited our general store, Williamson's Grocery, over the years and I enjoyed many conversations and delighted in her family history. We were thrilled to sees her at work with her dogs and remember her with great fondness.

I have know Gracie since I was a little girl when she worked at Frontier Town in North Hudson NY. She took a shine to me as a youngster and we had a great friendship during those years. I was also priveliged to know her father Poodles and her mom Grace. I would watch Poodles and Gracie perform in the rodeo arena 3 times a day and loved every minute of it. She and her mom were guests at my wedding in 1968. Gracie you will be missed but not forgotten.

Gracie was my friend for the past 10-12 years, and I'm grateful that we were able to be in NY for her services. I'll miss her Monday night phone calls to me in North Carolina. She was in my prayers every day, and now I expect I'll be in hers!

I have known Gracie since the 1950's when she and her mother and father were guest performers on the Shrine Circus (Polack Bros.) in Albany, N.Y. Being close friends with her cousin Tommy and his wife Struppi, I have visited with Gracie many times since. She was always a vibrant, kind and friendly woman whose proud independence was a legend in the circus community. She had a kind word for everyone and could "cut up jackpots" with the best. God bless you, Gracie. You are lovingly missed. May you have clear skies and dry lots to perform on forever.
With much love, Steve and Nancy

I've had the great pleasure of knowing Gracie for about 5 yrs. She was the epitomy of strength, energy and strong will. Her loss will be felt through so many diverse communities. She loved her church friends and all the "First of Mays" that worked the food stand.

My Grandmother (Oma) used to live on Hanneford Road and I rememer many times walking by Ms. Hanneford's house and she'd be outside with her dogs practicing. I had some pictures to show her and had stopped by the house a few weeks ago, but she wasn't home. She will surely be missed.

i knew grace all my life, she lived on hannaford road right next door. my father owned a grocery store and she came in every day for her news paper.she was always sweet, easy and fun to talk to. it was always fun to watch her perform with her show dogs. anytime grace went out of town my father would save her mail and papers, when she came to pick them up she always had alittle gift for my son.in 2002 when my father died she came to the service her warm hug and kind words were very comforting.i only wish i had the chance to see her once again.she will certainly be missed by me and many others. i would like to send my deepest sympathy to her family. thank you grace for many, many fond memories.

I ONLY KNEW GRACIE FOR FIVE DAYS AS HER ROOMMATE IN GLENS FALLS HOSPITAL BUT SEEMED LIKE I KNEW HER FOREVER. SHE WAS THE SWEETEST PERSON I KNEW WHO WAS SO SICK. WHEN MY 3 YR OLD GRANDSON CAME TO VISIT ME SHE WANTED HIM TO GO TO HER AND HE DID. THAT MADE HER SMILE. SHE DIDN'T WANT ME TO GO HOME AND WANTED TO SEE ME AGAIN. I TOLD HER I WOULD. AND, WE WILL SEE EACH OTHER AGAIN ONE DAY. WE'LL MISS YOU GRACIE AND GOD BLESS.
