John Patrick Convey Jr. passed away peacefully in Sun City, Ariz., on Monday, March 7, 2011, at the age of 85. He was born to Mary and John Convey on Sept. 26, 1925, in Olean, N.Y. and was raised in Roulette, where he maintained a lifelong home.
He joined the military during World War II and left the service in 1945. He was recalled to service during the Korean Conflict and was commissioned as an officer in the Air Force. He served in Honolulu, Hawaii, Sacramento, Calif. and at the Air Force Academy in Colorado where he taught the first class of cadets at the Academy. John was awarded the Bronze Star for service in the Viet Nam conflict. John also served as a Chief Systems Engineer for the Titan III missile project in Los Angeles, Calif. He retired after 27 years of service in 1970 and worked as an engineer and executive for 10 years.
John graduated St. Bonaventure's College, UCLA and achieved his Master's Degree at the Air Force Institute of Technology at Wright Patterson AFB in Dayton, Ohio. John had a lifelong commitment to education and taught at the Air Force Academy, American River College and Embry Riddle University.
John was an avid fly fisherman, golfer, and traveler. He was also an active and dedicated member of the Knights of Columbus, St. Elizabeth Council 12144.
John married Susan Alday on March 3, 1945 in Phoenix, Ariz. and they had four children, Cynthia, Michael, Tricia and Mark; and five grandchildren, Brian, Sara, Susan, Andrew and Michelle. John married Josephine Adams on June 3, 1989, and traveled the world with her.
John was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Susan; and his son, Mark.
A memorial mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 21, 2011, at St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church, 9728 Palmeras Dr., Sun City, AZ and a celebration of his life will be held in June, 2011 at St. Gabriel's in Port Allegany. Menke Funeral Home handled arrangements.
