Douglas A. Schaeffer

Douglas “Specks” A. Schaeffer, 88, of Pottstown, beloved husband to Betty Mae (Garner) Schaeffer for 64 years, passed away on Sunday at his residence after a courageous fight with cancer. Doug was often known to say during his treatment that he’d “never had a bad day.” Born in Stowe, PA, he was a son of the late Harrison S. Schaeffer and the late Elizabeth (Bean) Schaeffer. He was a member of the Pottstown High School Class of 1950 and Army veteran having been drafted during the Korean War. In his time in the service, Doug played baseball across Germany. Doug was an upholsterer for Henry Kappas, and Feceras Furniture, Pottstown. He also worked as a foreman for Diamond Glass for twenty three years. Doug was a member of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in Pottstown. Known by friends and teammates as “Specks,” Doug was drafted into the major league and had a contract with the St. Louis Cardinals. He was a lifelong avid sports fan. Surviving are a daughter, Beverly S. Gallo, Wilmington, NC; a son, Brian C. Schaeffer and his wife Cynthia, Pottstown; grandchildren Amelia Gallo, Thomasville, GA, Sierra Petro, Portsmouth, VA, KJ Petro and his wife Kiara, Aberdeen, MD; and two great grandchildren, Giuliana and Kane. He was predeceased by three brothers, Richard, Donald, and James Schaeffer, and two sisters, Nancy Kleman and Ruth Ann Pinder; and many friends. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
