Marcus Reichert Obituary

Marcus Reichert, Neo-Noir Film Director Marcus Reichert aka Mark Reichert (1948-2022) was an American painter, poet, author, photographer and film director. His neo-noir film Union City, which premiered at the 1980 Cannes Film Festival, was described by Lawrence O’Toole, film critic for Time magazine, as “an unqualified masterpiece.” His Crucifixion paintings have been described by Richard Harries, the Bishop of Oxford, as being among the most disturbing painted in the 20th Century, while the American critic Donald Kuspit has written that both Picasso’s and Bacon’s pale in comparison. His paintings have been exhibited widely, in Glasgow, London, Paris, and the U.S. Reichert is the author of four novels and his photography is featured in two books of photography including Reichert: The Human Edifice. Union City is held in the Film Archive of the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and his complete film works and his poetry and prose comprise the Marcus Reichert Archive at the Bibliothèque nationale de France, Paris. Reichert was a member of the SoHo arts scene in New York during the 1980s and went on to live and work in Bridgehampton, NY; London and Hexham, England and St. Hippolyte-du-Fort, France, where he became a beloved member of the close-knit community. Debbie Harry, of rock group Blondie, starred in Union City and recently traveled to France to appear in a new film written and directed by Reichert. Principal photography was completed the day Reichert became gravely ill. Harry describes Reichert as a director with “decisive strength and great flexibility simultaneously...an interesting, multi-talented artist.” Reichert died January 19, 2022 from complications of a pulmonary embolism. He grew up in the Collegeville area and is predeceased by his parents Rex and Beatrice Reichert. He is survived by his wife, writer and photographer Sally MacLeod Reichert, of St. Hippolyte-du-Fort and by his sister, landscape architect Melissa Reichert of Shrewsbury, Vermont. A celebration of life will be held in France at a later date.

Marcus (and Sally) lived in Washington, NC for a few years in the early 90's. We became friends, I thought he was the coolest person I had ever met. He and I would sit on his back porch and smoke these God-awful cigarettes that he'd bring back from Greece. I thought I'd pass-out after each puff. I miss out talks and his view of the world.
I have a painting in my house that I always smile at in passing, as well as a few of his art books, poems, and Sally's book.
I hope I can always hold on to these memories of Marcus and Sally. They were precious people when I knew them, I'm sure they still are. I love you guys.

Marcus and I were roommates at RISD for many a year, including 2 burnt out lofts above an abandon textile store
He accompanied me and witnessed the open casket burial of my first and only love 50 years ago, Normabel Lee. He remarked, " I never saw anyones heart drop out on to the floor as yours did when you looked down upon her face".

We both witnessed many other significant events together that impacted our
lives, I still have one of the three pieces of art i got from him. See u soon

True artists are a rarity nowadays. Through the many ups and downs, and bouts of illness over the years, Marc never ceased his work and remained an inspiration to all who knew him - and a total original in all the various media he employed.

Hey Marky Marky - see you soon, so get the fish fingers ready. Love and admiration - as ever x
