Matthew Duer Obituary

Matthew L. Duer of South Coventry passed away March 25, 2017, at Paoli Hospital surrounded by his children and long-time companion. Born November 3, 1935 in The Bronx, New York, he was raised by his father Ludwig and adoptive mother Hermine along with his seven brothers. Matthew was a local family hair stylist which was his second career after relocating to Pennsylvania with his children and former wife Marilyn. Matt will be remembered for his enthusiasm and love of theatre. He was a founding member and long-time president of The Coventry Players. Although he had many interests, theatre was his passion. He will be remembered for years of local theatre where he was either producing, directing, set building, or acting in the many shows the organization produced as well as his involvement with other local community theatres. He also enjoyed photography. Last but not least love for the New York Yankees. Matthew saw life as an adventure. He was a people person, a kind and caring man who ‘heard’ what others said. Matthew was proud to have served his country honorably in the United States Marines. Along with his long-time love and companion Kathy Naumann, he is survived by his children Matthew, N.Y., N.Y., Stephen, Queens, N.Y., Pamela Thomas, Oxford, Pa. and their spouses. He is also survived by his eight grandchildren Katyn, Jakob, Laurel, Emily, Stephen, Andrew, Samantha and Matthew who knew him as Opa. Matthew was preceded in death by his parents and eldest brother Stanley. He is survived by his six remaining brothers Gerard, Joseph, Edward, Walter, Louis, Bernard and spouses and eighteen nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at a later date in New York to celebrate Matthew’s life.

I met Matt through the Coventry Players. We worked on many plays together. It was one of the best times of my life. Matt really had a passion for life. He will be sorely missed.

From your loving son Stephen -

Dad, endless thanks for all the precious memories you generously gave me during your life. I will never forget your humor, your guidance and your overall love of theater. You taught me many things including how to be handy around the house, and that you can do anything if you put your mind to it. You taught me the importance of having a sense of humor, but also gave me a sense of seriousness when necessary. In other words, you taught me how to be a well rounded human being. Your wit, intelligence and infectious personality will be sorely missed.

To Matt's Family,
Matt always had a smile and a laugh everywhere he went. I got to know Matt by doing a production with Coventry Players in the 1990's. His warmth and charisma made him the perfect leader and I will remember him fondly. Prayers and God's blessings to you as you mourn his passing. Remember and cherish the good times!
