Richard Powell Obituary

RICHARD POWELL, EDUCATOR, FAMILY MAN, ATHLETE, ADVENTURER Richard "Dick" Powell, 79, of Gilbertsville, PA, a retired educator from Norristown and Spring-Ford High Schools, died unexpectedly Saturday, June 14, 2014 at Pottstown Memorial Medical Center. Born in Pottstown, he was the son of the late Frank and Mary (Yednock) Powell. There, he developed athletic, personal and business skills that would act as his compass for the remainder of his life. His life embodied a line from his favorite poem "The Road Not Taken" by Robert Frost, "...two roads diverged in a wood, and I, I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference." These roads took him from South Charlotte Street to Kutztown State Teacher's College, the United States Army, high school history teacher, business investments and adventures in Wildwood, New Jersey and Key West, Florida and to world travel where Richard's well known "gift of gab" enabled him and his loving wife, Lucille, to make lifelong friends. While at Kutztown, Richard met Lucille Bechtel, his future wife, also an educator. They shared an affinity for family, teaching, travel and the arts. An exceptional athlete, Richard excelled in tennis, basketball, baseball and football in high school and at Kutztown. He is an inductee of the Pottstown Sports Hall of Fame. He may have been best known as a competitive tennis player and coach and even late in his life, he would still look for a match on local courts in Pottstown, Wildwood and in Key West. Family and friends would say that tennis was a metaphor for how he took on life - he played it with agility, grace, humility and tenacity. Richard taught history and coached tennis, football, basketball and cross country at various times at Norristown High School (1960-1966) and then at Spring-Ford High School (1966-1991). Up until the time of his passing his family would often cross paths with his old students who always had fond memories and a funny story to tell about him teaching or coaching. A born communicator, his mentoring made a positive impact not just within his close family but to his extended family of students and friends. He made over 120 short historical documentaries called, "The Road Least Traveled," that aired for 11 years on PCTV. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Lucille; three daughters, Sherri Hulcher, wife of Steve Hulcher of Bryn Mawr, Lori Magilton, wife of Tom Magilton of Whitehall, and Holli Muffler, wife of John Muffler of Collegeville, and five wonderful grandchildren, Madison, Kelsey, Johnny, Will and Mei Lyn. He was predeceased by two brothers and three sisters. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, June 19, 2014 at 11 a.m. at New Hanover Evangelical Lutheran Church, 2941 Lutheran Road, Gilbertsville, PA. There will be no viewing. Relatives and friends will be received from 9:30-11 a.m. at the church. Burial will be at New Hanover Evangelical Lutheran Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to New Hanover Evangelical Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, 2941 Lutheran Road, Gilbertsville, PA 19525. Arrangements are by the Morrell Funeral Home Inc., (www.MorrellFuneralHome.com).

Mr. Powell was not only my teacher, but a friend. My friend and I stayed at his hotel in Wildwood. I remember when we first arrived we where not happy with our room and we demanded to see him and we where told that he was on the beach. When we saw him we couldn't stay mad when he hugged us and smiled and called us his favorite girls. Also when we went out that nite and my friend left me at the bar with a guy who walked me home, who did I find standing outside waiting and looking like an upset father. He will always be in my memories and he will be missed.

I first met Dick Powell whilke coaching basketball at Boyertown High School. We became good friends and later coached against each other while he was at Spting-Ford. We always enjoyed talking and I found him refreshing, informative, entertaining and colorful. And a real good guy.

My sympathy to his family. I remember he was advisor to our debate team and to reward us for our participation he took us to Philadelphia for Chinese food. He was an inspiration who always had time to listen. I have thought of him often over the years. He was a teacher who made me believe I could achieve my dreams.

Mrs. Powell, I am so sorry to hear of Mr. Powell's passing. As you know, he was one of my teachers and we remained friends the rest of our lives. I had the pleasure of playing racketball with him, having great conversations at the Pottstown Elks, doing a radio show with him and Bill Haley, Jr. on his WPAZ radio show and watching his many "The road least traveled" shows on PCTV, especially the shows from Key West. I truly feel like I lost a member of my family. I now live in Florida and cannot attend the service, but, please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family in this time of loss. Rest in Peace, Mr. Powell.

Was stunned to hear of Sick's passing. Always see him as a vibrant man in control of things and one with a love for his wife, children and church. Most of my memories of Sick are bonded in the Yednock family reunions, of which he has been the glue holding them together the last few years. My family's thoughts and prayers are with Lucille and all the Powell family. May He rest in peace and may his spirit be taking part in that big reunion chaired by St. Peter (with some help from other Yednocks). Will miss him.

I think it was in 1971, he gave every member of the SF girls lacrosse team a yellow carnation to pin on our uniforms to wear for the day. I think I still have it in my scrapbook! Very thoughtful gesture and I have never forgotten it!

We will dearly miss our good friend & neighbor of over 20 years! He loved to joke and tease. We will never forget the time that he had to call us to have us send his pants that he had left behind when they went to Key West. We will dearly miss seeing him & Lucille sitting out on their bench and taking their walks. We will meet again,Dick!
