Thomas Haldeman Obituary

Thomas Harvey Haldeman of New Hope, Bucks County, PA died October 5, 2018 at age 66 from an apparent heart attack. His sudden passing leaves behind his heart-broken family, his wife, Susan McMonigal, and their son, Samuel Haldeman and fiancée Katherine Tuggey of Austin, TX. Tom is survived by his parents, R. Kenneth Haldeman and Phyllis Stricks Haldeman of Carversville, his siblings, Nancy Haldeman Ruddle and Jerry Ruddle of Carversville, Laurie Stricks and Joshua Harrison of Manhattan, Michael Stricks and Gina Papalia of Manhattan, along with cousins Jim (who was Samuel’s Godfather) and Toni Haldeman, Susan Haldeman Diehl, his Aunt Jane Haldeman and his sisters-in law and brother-in-law, Rosemary McMonigal and Laura and Joseph Miscannonin addition to all of their children and families. Tom was pre-deceased by his mother, Mary Scheetz Haldeman and his grandparents, Harvey and Rebecca Haldeman and Thomas and Mary Scheetz of Chester Springs, PA. Tom was born and raised in Langhorne, PA and attended George School and Temple University. He was an avid outdoorsman and bird watcher and was most at peace with a fishing rod in tow along the Delaware River, off the jetties at Cape May Point or the shores of the Cabonga Reservoir in Canada. He believed in treating the environment with respect and shared that philosophy with the many Scouts, friends and family he mentored along the way. For many years Tom was Assistant Scout Master of Troop 34 of Solebury-New Hope where he indelibly impressed upon the Scouts the power and the beauty of nature. Everyone who knew Tom and his warm smile also knew their home was a welcoming place of friendship and stories. Tom always had room in his heart and a place at the table for a few others who consider him a second Father. Thomas, thank you for giving us all a wonderful life. A viewing will be held on Thursday morning, October 11th from 9:00 am to 10:30 am at the Swartz-Givnish Funeral Home, 323 Washington Avenue, Newtown, PA 18940 where the family will receive visitors followed immediately by a time for sharing. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, a donation in Tom’s name to the Boy Scouts of America or the Cornell University Ornithology Program would be a kind gesture of remembrance.

Hi Nancy, Ken, Phyllis et al- We were all just stunned & *devastated* to learn this sad, sad news. Especially Kim- Tommy being one of her very first crushes (if not THE first). And what a handsome, charming one he was too!!
I know he will always hold a special place in her heart. We all loved him & ALL of you! Our families went thru some STUFF together over there @ Four Lanes End!

Kim may have told you I had planned to be there with you today to give you all big Larry bearhugs. But I came home last night to a burning smell I couldn't locate & no power in one of the rooms, so I have an electrician coming any minute. Obviously I cant leave the house until this is resolved- which I doubt will be before Tom's memorial is over. I was SO looking forward to representing the Hersons & seeing all the Haldemans again. It has been EONS! Ive never met Thomas' family or your 2 gorgeous girls so am very disappointed to be missing them too!

But might you, Jerry, Ken & Phyllis be around this weekend so I could pay a brief condolence call? (or whenever would suit you). I have a card & a check from us to honor Tom- which I'd rather give to you in person & SEE you- instead of mailing- IF you're up to that.

Knowing how tough this is- I wouldn't stay long-
so no meal or fussy prep.

Please tell your folks why I'm not there right now. I do hope we all can meet up soon & that friends & loved ones comfort & support you today & in times to come missing your sweet & funny, witty & endearing, Scout Master-River Keeper- kind & generous & ALWAYS Hail Fellow Well Met.

My heavy heart is with you there right now-
even tho' not my person.
Many tears & hugs, Nan

Tom was probably one of the first childhood friends I had. His mother Mary and my mother, Laura Prickett, were very close friends in Langhorne, PA. This past Christmas, I had the blessing of seeing Tom after may years at Nancy and Jerry's Christmas Breakfast. Tom and I were revisiting childhood memories from the late 50's and early 60's. One worth sharing....For some reason Tom and I were at his house alone one evening. Well, we decided to light a fire in the fireplace. Suddenly, the room was filled with smoke! Tom quickly realized we hadn't opened the damper. Well we worked our hardest to rid the house of smoke before Uncle Ken got home. Needless to say we weren't successful. Fortunately, Uncle Ken wasn't too hard on us.
Tom, I will miss you. You left far to soon.

Your friend,
Craig Prickett
