Amedee Maserjian Obituary

Amedee J.

Maserjian

Poughkeepsie - Amedee J. Maserjian, a lifelong Poughkeepsie resident, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, August 12, one day before his 94th birthday. He was born on August 13, 1921 in Poughkeepsie, New York, to John Maserjian and Rose Obegi. Throughout childhood and as young adults, life for Amedee and his older brother, Edward, was intertwined with their parents' family business, Arax Photographic Studios, the foundation for which many of his interests and passions developed. During World War II, Amedee served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps Photographic Center in New York City. There, he was involved in the production of army training films, broadcasts to promote war bonds, motion pictures depicting the war effort and more. Following the war, he and his brother joined their parents at Arax in Poughkeepsie. Together they successfully expanded the businesses, offering individual and family portraits, wedding, school and commercial photography, photographic equipment and supply sales, professional film and picture developing services, art and picture framing. He and Edward remained innovative, adopting the latest equipment and techniques, and were partners in the business their entire working lives. Amedee married Lillian Sulahian of Queens, N.Y. on January 29, 1956, together raising five children in Poughkeepsie. His life was rich with family, friends and community. He volunteered and served with the Poughkeepsie Kiwanis Club, McCann Golf Course and Downtown Poughkeepsie Merchant's Association, and his family was involved with the Hudson Valley Armenian and Lebanese clubs. He was a photographer, avid golfer, enjoyed skiing and tennis, and loved backgammon (a family avocation). He often played the piano, was a real tinkerer and do-it-yourselfer who could fix just about anything, and was a fan of the latest tech gadgets, even throughout his later years. He generously shared his pastimes with his wife and family, had many close friends and relatives, and provided a wonderful life for all. He was predeceased by his parents and brother. Survivors include Lillian, his wife of 59 years; son John and daughter-in-law Gina Maserjian of Poughkeepsie; daughter Dawn and son-in-law Robert O'Shea of Hyde Park, N.Y; daughter Karen and son-in-law Mark Shan of Poughkeepsie; daughter Susan Maserjian of New York and London; son Steven Maserjian of New York; grandchildren Jason, Douglas and Kelsy O'Shea and Jared and Cloe Shan; and many cousins, nephews, nieces, grandnephews and grandnieces. Visitations will be held on Sunday., August 16, 2015, at the Wm. G. Miller & Son Funeral Home, Inc., 371 Hooker Ave., Poughkeepsie, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. A mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, August 17, 2015 at 10 a.m. at Holy Trinity Church, 775 Main Street, Poughkeepsie, and burial following the mass in the family plot at St. Peter's Cemetery in Poughkeepsie. To the Maserjian Family-

Growing up with both Maserjian families on Ridgeview Road was an amazing thing and one of life's best blessings. Mr. and Mrs. Maserjian were central to this.

Mr. Maserjian was a special person and an amazing role model for all of us in our formative years. He was a kind, wise and gentle person who never got mad when John, I and the other neighborhood kids destroyed his new lawn playing football or created other havoc just having innocent childhood fun.

Mr. Maserjian encouraged my love of photography and patiently taught me many things about this passion and about life in general. I will always be grateful for this.

I will miss you Mr. Maserjian and cherish the memories of all the good times that we shared. You left an indelible, positive mark on all of us.

John and family, we will always be here for you. Thank you for making us part of your family.

Love Ward & Jane

To "Lead Foot Lil" and my second family of John, Dawn, Karen, Susan and Steven on Ridgeview Rd. I remember Amedee as a very sweet man, never with a stern word even when he would catch us siphoning gas from his car for our mini bikes. He would just give us a little smile and walk on by. Don't know what I would have done without you all growing up at your house during my mother's illness and death. The woods, trails and your house were a refuge for me. I miss you all and I am so sorry you have lost your anchor Amedee. Love and prayers to you all!

My sincere sympathy to the Maserjian family. As a contemporary of Amedee, I spent much time in Arax with their film developing and cameras. But my real love was 16mm movies and Amedee sold me my Kodak Model E and Kodak Model K cameras and finally my Bolex with the three-lens turret. What happy memories!
