Doris Higgins Obituary
Wappingers Falls, N.Y. - Doris M. Higgins, 96, died peacefully and gracefully on Thursday, December 17, 2015 surrounded by her family. The daughter of John and May Hummel, she was born in the Village of Wappingers Falls on March 30, 1919 and she remained a village resident for her entire life.
Doris is a graduate of the original Wappingers High School on Mesier Avenue, graduating in 1936. She later attended the Wood-Puritan Secretarial School in Poughkeepsie. She was employed by Central Hudson Gas & Electric Co. and later the Wappingers Savings Bank. Mrs. Higgins retired as a manager of the village branch, and also served as treasurer of the corporation. In addition, together with her late husband Purcil, they operated the Higgins Funeral Home in the Village.
Doris had a strong faith and she was an 82 year member of the First Presbyterian Church. She was active in the church, serving on numerous committees. She was a member of the King's Daughters, PYAC and the Oak Grove Grange. Mrs. Higgins was an excellent cook and a consummate baker regularly sharing her table with family and friends.
Doris was predeceased by her younger brother Bill Hummel, her older sister Alice Jaycox, her twin sister Dorothy Russell and her daughter-in-law Carla Latham Webb. The "twins" were inseparable; together, they traveled to SanFrancisco, the Russian River Valley and Paris, France and most recently they could be found on summer afternoons and evenings on the front porch at 5 South Remsen Avenue.
Doris is survived by her son, Paul Higgins of Rhinebeck, son and daughter-in-law Roger and Patricia Higgins of New Hamburg, and her two beloved grandchildren, Brette Ann Higgins of Wappingers Falls, and Christopher Higgins of Albany. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and was a great aunt and a great great aunt to many of her nieces and nephews children.
A Memorial service celebrating Doris' life will be held on Monday, December 21, beginning at 11:00 AM at the First Presbyterian Church, South Ave., Wappingers Falls.
Memorial donations in Doris' name can be made to the organ fund at the First Presbyterian Church or the Grinnell Library.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Delehanty Funeral Home, Wappingers Falls.
