Edward Husted Obituary

Edward F. Husted

Fishkill - Edward F. Husted, 87, a lifelong Fishkill resident, and also of Hutchinson Island, FL, died on August 18, 2018 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center.

Born in Hughsonville, NY on May 28, 1931, he was the son of Edward and Lena (Pietropolo) Husted. Ed proudly served our country in the US Army and received his Bachelor's Degree from SUNY Potsdam, with a piano major from the Crane School of Music, and his Master's Degree from Western Connecticut State University.

On July 5, 1958 at St. Joachim's Church, Ed married Ann (Vassalo) who predeceased him on February 20, 2010.

Ed was a Music Teacher with the Arlington School District for thirty years, retiring in 1987. He continued to study piano, music, and jazz improvisation and performed throughout his life.

Ed was a talented professional pianist, starting his career at the young age of twelve. Ed performed extensively at country clubs, night clubs, restaurants and private parties throughout the Hudson Valley, New York City, and South Florida. Among his notable engagements were his solo performance of "Rhapsody in Blue" with the Philadelphia Orchestra, and as an accompanist for Ethel Merman's performance with the Saratoga Pops Orchestra. Ed loved Dutchess County, and often lent his talent to performances at nursing homes and the Dyson Cancer Center.

Ed's love of George Gershwin's work resulted in "An Evening of Rhapsody" recording. This, along with other recordings, memorialize his exceptional gift of music, cherished by many.

A gifted athlete, sports also played an important role in his life. The end of Ed's sophomore year at Potsdam marked the beginning of his professional baseball career. Ed recently reminisced about being Al Todd's first recruit! He joined the Chicago Cubs Minor League affiliate team, the Janesville Cubs, in 1952, and played in the minors for two years. He returned to Potsdam during the offseason to finish his musical education, become Potsdam's Assistant Baseball Coach, and was inducted into the 1985 Potsdam University Athletic Hall of Fame.

Ed was a parishioner of St. Mary, Mother of the Church in Fishkill, and was a member of the Elks Club in Beacon. An avid golfer, he was a longtime member of the Dutchess Golf and Country Club.

He is survived by his daughters, Sharon Husted, Susan Landers and husband Tom, and Stacey Husted and husband David Levitt; his grandchildren, Scott Bierce, Alexandra Landers, Tommy Landers, Grace Landers, Isabelle Landers, Ruby Levitt and Quincy Levitt; his siblings, Jacque Negler, Jim Husted, John Husted, Richard Husted and Mary Townsend; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. In addition to his parents, Ed was also predeceased by his sister, Barbara White, this past June.

Calling hours will be held on Wednesday from 4-8pm at the McHoul Funeral Home of Fishkill, Inc., 1089 Main Street, Fishkill. The funeral service will be private.

I want to remember Ed this morning, after a huge win by the Los Angeles Dodgers! last summer, at Ginny Swartzs memorial service, I was reunited with my teacher and accompanist after decades and decades. it was a wonderful connection after which, we called each other, he sent me tapes , and we watched last years World Series on the phone together. so when the Dodgers won in the 18th inning last night, Im sure that Ed had a part in that victory !miss you Ed

My deepest condolences to the family and to those who knew and loved him. Our family too will miss him dearly. He, my Uncle John and Aunt Joan (LaFalce), also music graduates from Potsdam's Crane School and with the Arlington school system, were a close-knit family. I was fortunate that, years ago, he let this little kid play a couple of 'gigs' with him at one of the clubs in Hyde Park. Those of us who were given the gift of knowing him can only smile with the memory of a talented, gracious and nice human, not often found at this level today.
Peace Ed.

To the Ed Husted family,
I am deeply saddened about your father's passing.
Our paths crossed many years ago at Potsdam (Crane Music school) and again here in the Hudson Valley.
We were fellow musicians in Local 238 and played a lifetime of commercial jobs. Ed was the best pianist I ever met or heard.
May he rest in peace and I will treasure his memories.

To Sue, Sharon, Stacy, all Grandkids and the entire Husted family: We were so saddened to learn of the passing of Eddie. He was a good guy, friend, father, grandfather and a great "piano man". I'll always remember the "old" St. Mary's of Fishkill basketball days with a heartfelt smile! Our prayers are with you and may God Bless you always. ~ George and Michael Caruso.

Richie, sorry to hear of your brothers passing. Miss you and Franscesca.

I am sorry to hear about the loss of you father. Clearly he lived a full life in which he immersed himself in his passion for music. Continue to cherish the memories you all shared. Please consider the scripture at 2 Thessalonians 2:16, 17 which says " May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and gave everlasting comfort and good hope by means of undeserved kindness, comfort your hearts and make you firm. As you can see God deeply cares for us and desires to comfort us especially in difficult times such as these. Please rely on Him for the strength to get through this.

Lived Ed in Florida at Hutchinson Island and heard him play. He also played at my sons wedding in Poughkekepsie. Have completed an extensive ancestor study and also found that we were related many years ago.We were both related to Angel Husted who was one of the original founders of Greenwich, Conn and John Husted who was a Chaplin for Queen Elizabeth. He will be very missed as he was a wonderful person. Ron Husted, The Villages, Florida
