EDWARD SHIH-TO PAN

October 28, 1929 - September 27, 2015 Born in China, Edward S. Pan grew up in the historic years of Japanese occupation and civil war. As the Communist Revolution became inevitable, he pulled out of his freshman year in college and relocated in Taiwan with his family. He stayed there long enough to repeat his freshman year and study two more years. Then, with the aid of a Jesuit missionary, Ed found himself in USA at Marquette University to begin as a freshman for the third time.

He earned a mechanical engineering degree from Marquette, followed by an MS in metallurgy from MIT. He finally ended his schooling with a PhD in material science from NYU. This education allowed him to have a career in research. Ed spent ten years at Englehardt Industries working with precious metals and twenty-six years at IBM helping to develop the computer chip.

He is predeceased by wife, Angela Liu Pan, and brother, Edwin S. Pan. Surviving are his wife, Lois Latimer Pan, three children, and eight grandchildren.

Ed was known for his smile, grace on the dance floor, and willingness to help. He served with Lois two years as Resident of the Honolulu Friends Meeting. He was also a member of the MidHudson Valley Ballroom Dance Club, the Dutchess County Chinese Assn, FF Chinese Fraternity, and was a board member of the MidHudson Memorial Society. Volunteer work included service at the FDR Presidential Library and tai chi instructor for Center for Lifetime Studies at Marist College.

Private services will be held at the Chuang Yen Monastery in Carmel, NY. A memorial service will be held at Foulkeways at Gwynedd in Pennsylvania.

I certainly remember you Uncle Edward and can't thank you enough for what you did for my family, and all the years you knew my Mom and Dad: Pauline and Chester.
Thank you for rescuing my Father in 2006, after trying to reach my Father and the phone no answer and I called you to go check, and you found my Father is the Garage at the House in Town of Poughkeepsie when unfortunately the car jumped into gear! And, you contacted 911.
All these years, I remember you when little and lived in Binghamton/ Vestal, New York when you and my Dad worked for IBM. Also, I remember Auntie Angela!

Uncle Edward AND Lois:
Thanks for all your help assisting my late Dad : Chester Chih Kung Chao back in 2002, when my mom became terminally ill with cancer. I also appreciated you when I called you in late February 2006, to go to check the house at Pasture Lane Poughkeepsie, NY when my Dad didn't answer the phone. You found him in the garage with a hip fracture after the car jumped into gear and got him rushed to the hospital for medical attention! this was shortly before you and Lois departed for Hawaii. You are a hero!
When unfortunately , our house got sold , I was trying to salvage what I can find and save the family belongings. I found a photograph of you doing Ballroom Dancing with my parents. I will always remember the happy times . I didn't have it easy growing up in Poughkeepsie, NY.
I will always remember your children Doreen and Micheal and late wife Angela. I will always remember the days in the 1960's , your family and mine lived in Binghamton, NY area and both you and my Dad worked out of the IBM office in Endicott, NY. My late dad told me you studied the properties of metals in your education!
I appreciated all you have done!
