Florence I. Scalzi

Hyde Park, NY - Florence I. Scalzi, 82, a longtime area resident, was called home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, January 24, 2012 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and sister.

Born in Portland, Oregon on January 5, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Stephen and Irene Burkowski Duhon.

Mrs. Scalzi worked for ARA in Poughkeepsie and Newburgh for many years.

She was a communicant of St. Peter's Parish and a member of the Western Printing Retirees.

On August 11, 1950, in Portland, Oregon, she married Louis J. Scalzi. Mr. Scalzi predeceased her on April 1, 2004.

Florence is survived by her son, Stephen Scalzi, and wife, Suzanne, of Cottekill, NY; daughter, Elena Scalzi, of Hyde Park; five grandchildren, Gina Kowalski, and husband, Gregg, of Newburgh, Nicholas Lyons of Newburgh, Lisa Williamson, and husband, Chris, of Hyde Park, Stephanie Scalzi of North Carolina, and Rebecca Scalzi of Cottekill; five great-grandchildren, Gabriella, Blake, Camryn, Brianna, and Shane; brother, Edward Duhon, of California; brother-in-law, Bart Scalzi of Poughkeepsie; brother-in-law, Mario Scalzi, and wife, Beverly, of Poughkeepsie; sister-in-law, Mary Wilcenski, and husband, Mike, of Albany; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her beloved daughter, Margo Kobler in December, 2010; and sister, Loretta Anderson.

Calling hours will be from 5 to 8 pm, Thursday, January 26th at Sweet's Funeral Home, Inc., Rte. 9, Hyde Park.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. James A. Garisto at 10 am, Friday, January 27th at Our Lady of the Rosary Chapel of St. Peter's Parish, 299 Hudson View Dr., Poughkeeepsie, NY 12601.

Burial will take place in the family plot at St. Peter's Cemetery, Poughkeepsie.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Peter's Parish, 6 Fr. Cody Plaza, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601.

My husband, David Hill, who passed in 2008 worked with Florence for many years at ARA. She was there when my daughter was born 40 years ago. She was a great lady. Flo, I love you and the Scalzi family is in my prayers.

When I was growing up I was always in your home and I was always treated like part of your family. I am so sad for the loss of your Loving Mother who cared about everyone and would help anyone in need.
