Greg Boone Obituary

Greg Boone

Poughkeepsie - Greg Boone, 58 of Poughkeepsie, NY (Dec. 19,1959-Jan.23,2018) Artist, writer, penciller, inker, publisher, son, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend, passed away after a valiant battle with heart disease. A local resident most of his life, Greg was predeceased by his beloved parents, William Boone and Ernestine Clarke, and is survived by his sisters Shekinah Suitt of Poughkeepsie NY, Kimani Boone of Greensborough NC, and brother Rahsaan Boone of Rochester, NY, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and oodles of friends.

Greg Boone, known affectionately by many as just 'Boone', was a 1978 graduate of Poughkeepsie HS and a 1984 graduate of Vassar College. He began his career working for the Gannett News Service, and is the author of multiple, highly regarded comic books which are now collected and regarded as classic - among them are: Monster Posse, Evol Baby, Radrex, Miss Maam's Intergallactic Fried Chicken and Super Hero Club, and Big Heads. His images and designs were featured on the mosaic sculptures that stood for many years in Waryas Park, and Greg worked in other mediums and artistic groups and venues.

Because of his extra-ordinary talent, fearless vision, and enduring wonder and love for his family, friends and the world around him, some suspected that Boone was an alien; a benevolent, curious visitor from another galaxy. But those who love him know he was simply an exceptional human, the likes of which we shall not see again soon.

Visitation will be Tuesday January 30, 2018 from 4 to 8 PM at the Timothy P. Doyle Funeral Home 371 Hooker Avenue Poughkeepsie, NY 12603. A Service of Remembrance will be celebrated during visitation at 7:30pm. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the American Stem Cell Center of Excellence, 7800 Southwest, 57th Avenue, Suite 203, South Miami, Fl. 33143; 866-216-7223. Just heard the news today. You will be missed very very much Greg. You were always in our corner. Fighting for the artists. You were our most loyal and consistent and supportive member. I'm deeply saddened at your passing. I'll forever remember your courage and bravery and how outspoken you were in all matters dealing with what's right and good. You were a champion in word and dead. A bright light to all. Brave and true. Rest in peace brother. You're with Jesus now. In a much better place. God bless your spirit.

Gregory! So sorry to hear of his passing. It has been many years since I saw him but the fun times we had are memories that still make me smile. Many days I would look up and see him standing at my door, sketch pad under his arm and we would spend the evening laughing, talking and sharing good food and drink. Another good man gone too soon. Farewell, my friend.

My deepest sympathies to the Boone family. Just thinking about Greg's unique sense of humor makes me smile. And let's not forget he introduced me to my first "crush", Derek. For that, Greg will forever be my Ace-Boone -Coon.
Sincerely,

You were my Black Brother confidant in a world of art and journalism I was new to. You kept me grounded and kept my soul at peace with your being. I was in awe of you every step and you every sketch. May you rest in peace and may you family know special you were to so many. John DuBose (African American artist, teacher, Gulf war Vet)
