Gregory Cotter Obituary

Gregory E. Cotter

BEACON - Gregory E. Cotter, 42, a longtime resident of Beacon, died on May 31, 2011 in Beacon.

Born on February 26, 1969, he was the son of Gerard Cotter and Esther Breedveld Cotter.

He resided in the South Shore of Mass. until the age of 19. He settled down in Beacon, NY where he lived with his wife and daughter. He graduated from the Northeast Broadcasting School in 1994 and worked as a contractor later owning his own business specializing in professional painting.

On August 18, 2004 in Ocean City, MD, he married the only woman he ever loved, Nancy L. Phillips Cotter, who survives at home. They shared 19 loving, wonderful years together. He was predeceased by his mother Esther Cotter and brother Gerard Cotter.

He is also survived by his daughter, Samantha Daniel; grandson, Izaiah Gaither; brothers, Joseph Minichiello and Thomas Cotter; sisters, Angela Minichiello, Jane Sinclair, Carolyn Schaupp, Angela Palmer, Elisa and Leah Hirsh-Cotter; and many other family members and close friends.

He was an avid Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots fan. He was passionate about music, exercising, and playing his guitar. His sense of humor always made you laugh uncontrollably and will never be forgotten.

Greg was the guy who was always willing to help anyone in need and was a loving father and cherished each moment with his grandson, who he called "Beanbag."

The Memorial Service will be held on June 14, 2011 at 10 am at the Fishkill Baptist Church, 107 Route 82, Fishkill. www.fishkillbaptist.net.

In lieu of flowers, a college scholarship fund for his grandson, Izaiah Gaither, has been set up. Contributions can be mailed to: Hudson Valley Federal Credit Union, C/O Izaiah Gaither College Fund, 159 Barnegat Rd., Poughkeepsie, NY 12601.

Gregory, You always made sure we went to see some kind of fireworks every 4th of July because you knew how much I loved fireworks and Boston always out did them all.The hardest part about this weekend is you proposed to me on the 4th of July on our front porch after a great time watching the fireworks at Memorial Park. I was just there last night with Sam, Ellen,Barb and Adam with his 3 children and by God's Grace Adams 2 year old little girl was so excited and so happy I was actually able to feel Joy because of that precious little girl. That was a Gift... I still cry everyday Gregory... Right now I have a giant hole in my heart and I miss you so much but what's most important is you are now at peace and you're watching over all of us who love you so much.
I Love You Gregory... Forever... Nancy

Greg, Every day that you are gone is one more day that I miss you. Our friendship is something that I will treasure forever. I miss our phone calls of encouragement to each other. You have made me a stronger woman, and for that, I thank you. I know now that you are feeling peace, and that was so hard for you to attain in life. Rest well, my dear friend!

i had just spoken to my unlce greg prior to deploying..i always enjoyed my motivation talks on the phone with him..from the very beginning of my time in the marines, until i deployed, he was always intrigued and wanted updates on my every move...i will never forget the celtics and bruins games he treated me to when he visited, all the those years back...a 20 minute phone call with someone u love in ur life, and when they are genuinely interested in ur current circumstances, truly goes a long way with me, especially so close to leavin the states

To the Cotter Family,
I knew Greg during elementary school days at Humphrey School. It doesn't surprise me to read the many posts about Greg being the one to make everyone laugh! That is what I remember most about him! In 6th grade, each student was to create an "invention" and present an oral report or "marketing message" to the class. While most had an "average" report, students from both 6th grade classes were invited to see Greg's "Automatic Breakfast Machine", complete with a plate of real bacon, eggs, and toast, which came out of a box that Greg made to look like a machine. Although "you had to be there" to see this truly humorous and unique invention, the ones who knew Greg well, I'm sure could picture the talent that took place. I always compared Greg's sense of humor to actor Robin Williams, who also made everyone laugh. My deepest sympathy to the entire Cotter family.

greg the nite we played basketball,at geering park was one to remember.you me and willie, against those three from albany.that one guy really smoked you,and that is why we lost consecutive games.the guy that took your serenity away was good enough to play with the pros.
it was also nice to teach you songs on the guitar, although i wasn't into metal
i taught you what i knew.
i knew greg for many years, and he hated yankees, and by the way i met david ortiz yesterday.
i was stunned to hear about your dimiss
and i love you,and always will think about our jam sessions together.

Nancy, I am so sad for your loss. Greg is someone I will never forget. He had the biggest heart and he loved you with ALL of it. Some people are put on this earth to make us smile. I am smiling now just thinking about how much fun it was to be in the same room with him. He was the quickest wit and a real teddy bear under that tough guy facade. i was lucky to have known him.

A happy day in Beacon

We may not have kept in touch over the years, but when we did get together and talk it was like it was yesterday. Our conversations were open, honest and caring.

The picture in the guest book is how I remember Greg the last time that I saw him and how I will continue to remember him - with a great big smile and joy in his heart.

To my baby brother, God loves you and blesses you and so do I.

I met this amazing man 23 years ago, he made me laugh through some of the hardest times in my life. Always gave me good advice and had a way of giving me much gratitude in life. After not seeing him in many years he visited me while i was camping and in no time had us all laughing hysterical. He was impressed at our all girl camping skills and had many jokes about it! I will keep you in my heart forever. My prayers are with his family and close friends. As for Greg i will see him on the other side! Till then Much Love my friend.
