Herbert Modlin Obituary

Herbert Gene

Modlin Sr.

Wappingers Falls - Herbert Gene Modlin Sr., 78, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, March 27, 2016 under the care and guidance of Hudson Valley Hospice.

Herbert Gene was born December 14, 1937 in Hertford, North Carolina, the youngest son of Grant and Hazel (Boyce) Modlin, sibling to Joyce G. Higgenbotham, William Grant Modlin (deceased), and Barbara Ann Coardes (deceased). As a graduate of the Perquimans County High School, he enlisted and served in the United States Army and Army Reserves until 1963. He married Mavis A. Thomas October 25, 1959 and resided in the Bronx, New York until he moved his family to the Hudson Valley in New York (1973). The family, along with many friends, has lost an endearing human being. His passions were hunting, classic automobiles, drag racing, and football. At different points in his life, he was an active participant in restoring cars, racing, as well as playing and coaching football. His dedication to hard work made him a committed husband, father, and friend.

Herbie was a faithful employee for many years to a local auto-service station as a Mechanic and retired in 2006 from a local school district as a Bus Driver/Mechanic. In retirement, he and his wife found pleasure in traveling and spending time with family and friends. He was widowed in August 2012.

Herbert Gene Modlin Sr. is survived by his son, Herbert Gene Modlin Jr.; daughter, Starr-Gayle Modlin Dinio; son-in-law, Remigio Christopher Dinio Jr.; grandchildren, Remigio "Trey" Christopher Dinio III and Solee Mavis Dinio; one sister, Joyce Higgenbotham; sisters-in-law, Emma McKnight Nelson, Beatrice Pereta McKnight, and Celeste Modlin; devoted and faithful friend, Erma Dancy. Also surviving are a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.

To Starr and family,

I'm so sorry for your loss; so thankful for the service your father gave to our country; and so inspired by the rich and full life he led. His legacy and kindness shines through his family, and I pray you are comforted knowing he is reunited with his love. May they rest in peace together.

Star and Bert, may you find comfort in Psalms 121:1-2 " I will lift mine eyes unto the hills from which cometh my help. My help cometh from the Lord which made heaven and earth."
God will wipe all tears away.

To the Modlin family, my deepest condolences to your entire family. 40 years ago when I was just a teen was when I first met Herbie, he immediately became a friend, father figure and confidant, we had many talks about life, he was so wise and funny....He was very close to my ex husband for a very long time, always stopped at our home to visit and catch up....he worked on my car many times, ...one story I have for you...friends and I were up at a hangout having a good time we had my ex's moms car which somehow ended up in the lake we were at and we didn't know what to do.......so of course we called Herbie to the rescue,.....he came with the wrecker and pulled us out but not without the parental scolding we deserved and a good laugh. He was such a wonderful role model to have in my life and when we had children he was like an additional grandparent to our girls, we all have such fond memories....he had such a love for Mavis and was so incredibly proud when he spoke of his children and grandchildren....the day he became a grandpa was just the icing on the cake of life to him.I know what kind of friend he was to me and my familyhow blessed you were to have him for a Dad and grandpa....I will always treasure those memories.....looking at this picture of him stirs such emotion, I always loved his beautiful "golden" smile. He will always be in my heart. I am so sorry for your loss, I pray you can find comfort knowing he is once again with the love of his life... my love to your entire family. Gigi Lundewall
