John Aldeborgh Obituary
Edgartown, MA - John Erik Aldeborgh, passed peacefully at home in Edgartown, MA, on November 3, 2017 at age 91 -- although his family is officially giving him credit for reaching 92, as he missed it by only a few days.
Born to Erik and Signe (Johnson), November 10, 1925 in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.; married to devoted wife, Janet, for 61 years who survives him; he is also survived by five eternally grateful children: Mary M. (St. John) of Norfolk, MA; John E., Jr. of Boxford, MA; Timothy D. of Denver, CO; Erik H. of Croton-on-Hudson, NY and Tjark J. of Edgartown, MA; and a posse of ten loving grandchildren who affectionately called him "Grampy", though he preferred "Grandad" but never got it.
He attended Millbrook School for Boys in the early 40's, then honorably served his country in the Navy during World War II before graduating Williams College in 1949. Ran Standard Gage Company in Poughkeepsie until the late 1970's while living in Hyde Park and raising his family; moved to Herring Creek Farm on Martha's Vineyard year-round during retirement; avid private pilot for nearly 50 years (all accident-free); downhill skier (not all accident-free - there was one particularly epically failed geländesprung at Mad River Glen, witnessed by many); equestrian; tennis player; sports car aficionado; skilled amateur mechanical engineer and inventor; and all-around lover of anything motorized.
He will be missed greatly for his generosity, irreverent sense of humor, and ability to never let the truth interfere with a good story. Those who knew him, loved him. May he forever rest in peace.
A celebration of his life for family and friends will be held in the coming summer. In lieu of flowers, donations to Hospice of Martha's Vineyard.

John E. Aldeborgh, one of the finest people I ever worked for 1970-1980 at Standard Gage. He did love his planes and the 1974 Dino. I loved his family as well.

JOHN WAS ALWAYS A GENTLEMAN AND DOWN TO EARTH. IN 1963 HE PURCHASED A CORVETTE STINGRAY FROM ME . I WAS IMPRESSED WITH HIM THEN AND REMAINED SO TO THIS DAY.
