Joseph Bellucci Obituary

Joseph A. Bellucci

Pawling - Joseph Anthony Bellucci passed away peacefully at home with his family by his side on Saturday, July 19, 2014, in Pawling, New York. Joe was born on February 12, 1928, in Mahopac, NY., to Antonio and Maria Bellucci. He grew up in Mahopac, on Buckshollow Road with his parents, sisters: Ada and Viola, and his brother Anthony (Tony). He attended the Mahopac Schools (K-12) where he made many boyhood friends; these friends remained with him throughout his entire life. He loved his sports almost as much as anything and excelled at them throughout his time in school. Through the years, he often reminisced about the wonderful experiences he had growing up in the small town ofLake Mahopac, NY.

After High School he attended Cortland State along with his lifelong friend Joe Carr. Upon graduating, and then a year of teaching and coaching in New Berlin, NY., he served in the Army during the Korean War where he attained the rank of Master Sergeant and received the Combat Infantry Badge (CIB). Although he rarely spoke of his battle experiences, he was proud to have served his country.

He returned home after the war, and as he often said to us (his children) "I must have done something right" as he met his wife and the love of his life, Jill (nee Coe) whom he married on a snowy day on Dec. 18, 1954.

Joe taught and coached for 36 years in the Mahopac School District. During this time Jill and Joe raised their ten children on Watermelon Hill Road alongside many great friends and neighbors. They were also life long and committed members of the St. John's Parish. Joe was beloved by his family, many friends, students, and community members who recall him as a wise, respectful, and honorable man.

Joe is survived by his wife Jill and children, Mary Jean Perry (Paul), Joe Bellucci (Jeannine), Clare Glassberg (Lee), Jane Lawrence (Rick), John Bellucci (Kathy), James Bellucci (Patty), Mike Bellucci (Helena), and Annie Bellucci. He was predeceased by his daughter Rose Marie and his son Peter.

Most dear to Poppy were his many Grandchildren: Wil, Clare Marie, Joey, Katie, Dan, Andrew, Elissa, Julia, Karla, Susanna, Ronnie, Rose Marie, Theresa, Giovanna, Jill Ann, Ashley, John, Johnnie, Jenny, Matt, David, James, Lauren, Michael, Paul, Thomas, Jane, Todd, and Joe and his three Great-Grandchildren: Aidan, Giuliana Rose, and Harper Grace.

For all of his 86 years Poppy was surrounded by that which he cherished most, his family and friends. His faith in God sustained him throughout his wonderful life.

Visitation will be held at Horn & Thomes Funeral Home, 83 East Main Street, Pawling, NY on Friday, July 25 from 3-7 PM, with an American Legion service at 6:30 PM. A memorial mass will be held at St. John's Church, Pawling, NY on Saturday, July 26 at 10:00 am. In lieu of flowers donations to a charity of your choice would be appreciated. A great man, a great coach❤

He was the best! The favorite of all my teachers. He had a great sense of humor and used it to keep his class under control. If a kid was acting up, he would have them do something like come to the front of the class and bend down to put his head in an empty waste basket. Nothing harmful just embarrassing enough that the kid was unlikely to disrupt the class again and the rest of us had a good laugh. Everyone loved him - even the kid with his head in the basket . He made such a positive impact on everyone- a lasting legacy.

I only wrestled for Coach Bellucci for 1 year back in 1977. Thinking back at that time it was more of a spiritual experience , what he taught was the corner stone to my foundation. My brother and I Robert Casey would visit Coach Bellucci when I would come to town from Colorado. He still lives in my heart as he does in many of his wrestlers. What a great Dad all of you had while he was here on earth, now in Heaven. God Bless to all, Neil Casey.

Aunt Jill and Kids,

Somewhere around my 10th birthday, Uncle Joe came up to our house looking for me. Uh oh. I probably thought I was in some sort of trouble so imagine my happy surprise when he told me that he wanted me to go with him to Tom Kat Sporting Goods (as you recall, the cultural center of Mahopac at the time) to buy me a birthday present. He took the time to take me for me my first pair of real baseball cleats. They were probably the only pair, since as it turned out, baseball was not my game but I loved those shoes...and I love all of you. Thanks Uncle Joe.

Very, very sorry to hear about Coach Bellucci's passing, as his caring, kindness and support had a major impact on my life and all those around him. He made everyone who knew him a better person, and the world is a sadder place without him in it. My deepest sympathies to his family, especially my classmates Joe and Claire, and his many friends. I hope we can all pass on the lessons he taught us to others we meet, and keep his loving memory alive through our deeds.

I LOVED Mr. Bellucci! He was the best. He lived his life as a wonderful reflection of God's love.
Lots of funny memories too of his cheerful ways of maintaining order in the classroom - for kids that were acting up - he had them either stand in front of the room with their head in a trash can, or with outstretched arms holding erasers, or skip around the room or temporarily "closed" in the locker. Things you couldn't do today, but always good natured and just embarrassing enough that you thought twice before acting up again.
So happy that we got to see him at our 50th class reunion in 2012. He was a true life model for all of us

Our most sincere condolences to Mrs. Bellucci and the entire Bellucci family. He was a very special man. I have many fond memories of Mr. Bellucci. He was a superb teacher, but more than that he was a great all-around man who influenced the lives of his students.

We're so glad we got to see and talk to him at our 50th class reunion in 2012. And he was just as happy to see all of us, too!

Mr. Bellucci will be greatly missed, but his legacy will live on with the wonderful memories we have of him.

When you think of Coach Bellucci you of course think of The Mahopac Wrestling Team. Since my two sons wrestled there & I coach the youth program, you always felt his influence. Because of tragedy in my family it is always difficult to go to wakes but was there in spirit. I never met the man but knew two of his sons & both were super people. I pray to the Lord Jesus Christ that his soul has entered into Heaven to his lasting reward.

Dear family,

Just left mass at church. Wanted you to know what a fitting service for a wonderful man... You boys hit it on the nail everyone of you, your father was so proud and one of the last of a wonderful breed. On my way home the song by George jones came on "who's gonna fill their shoes". Such am appropriate song... But then I thought you boys are because your such much like your dad and mom, the world is a better place with people like you all in it. I wish I could say it gets easier but almost seven years later and the pain so fresh.. But you go on and deal like they taught us... Love to you all

I'm so sorry to hear about the passing of Mr. Belucci. A wonderful man and a great coach. I was fortunate to wrestle for him one year, and he told me I had potential. I then fell in love with basketball and never wrestled again. He came up to me my senior year, put his hand on my shoulder and told me he thought he could have made me a champion. But, what was important he said was to do what makes you happy. So glad to have known him. My prayers are with you all.

To Mrs. Bellucci and Family, My deepest regrets in the loss of a great man , friend, teacher and coach. In knowing Mr. "B" I had the opportunity to know his whole family. In my scripture reading recently I read, "BE STRONG AND VERY COURAGEOUS, THAT YOU MAY OBSERVE TO DO ACCORDING TO ALL THE
LAW WHICH MOSES MY SERVANT COMMANDED
YOU; DO NOT TURN FROM IT TO THE RIGHT HAND OR TO THE LEFT, THAT YOU MAY PROSPER WHEREVERYOU MAY GO. JOSHUA 1:7
That is Mr. Bellucci. He stayed the narrow path in the light that God provided for him. He was true to God and to all who knew him. As Christ loved the church so did Mr. Bellucci love and care for all of us. For that I pray Thanksgiving for the season God gave him for all of us. Sincerely Al
