Joseph Sabia Obituary

Joseph J. Sabia, Jr.

Joseph John Sabia, Jr., 90, a resident of the town of Poughquag, passed away peacefully at the Veteran's Hospital at Castle Point on May 30, 2012. Another one of Tom Brokaw's , Greatest Generation has gone to the Lord.

Born in Manhattan on February 1, 1922, Joseph proudly served our country in the United States Army during World War II. He went ashore at Anzio, Italy and served as a radio operator in a combat unit that fought all the way to the Swiss border.

He married the love of his life, Louise Paterno on November 16, 1947. After working for his family business, he moved to Dutchess County where he was owner and operator of the former Knierman Oil Company.

He gave freely of his time to many local organizations including the Office for the Aging, the East Fishkill Rotary , United Way, and the American Red Cross, and he also served as a Boy Scout leader. He was an active parishioner of St. Denis Church, Hopewell Junction.

Joseph is survived by his wife, Louise Sabia; his four children, Joseph J. Sabia III of Poughquag, Janice Endsley and her husband Andrew of Lagrange, Barbara Sabia and her husband Andrea Angera of Middlebury, CT, and Robert Sabia and his wife Kathy of Mt. Kisco; his eight grandchildren, Kristen Ouimet, Kimberly Popken, Kelly Walters, Brenton Ferrara, Connor and Sofia Angera, and Michael and Elizabeth Sabia; four great grandchildren, Emily and Madeleine Ouimet and Jake and Kaylie Popken; and his sister, Marie Lavallo. He was predeceased by his brothers, Dan and Anthony Sabia and sisters, Mildred Sabia and Tina Adler.

The wake will be held at McHoul Funeral Home, Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction on Friday, June 1 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, June 2 at 10:30 a.m. at Denis Church, 602 Beekman Road, Hopewell Junction. Interment will follow at St. Denis Cemetery with military honors.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be directed to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research (www.michaeljfox.org) or another charitable organization of your choice.
