Henry Monaco

LONGMEADOW, MA - Dr. Lawrence Henry Monaco, age 87, passed away on March 5, 2013, in the care of his loving family.

Dr. Monaco was born in Philadelphia, PA on March 31, 1925 and had been a resident of Poughkeepsie for 54 years. He moved to Massachusetts in 2012.

Dr. Monaco honorably served his country during World War II in the Army Air Force.

He received his bachelor's degree at LaSalle College in Philadelphia, PA. He received his master's degree and PhD at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, IN.

Dr. Monaco was the first professor hired at Dutchess Community College when it opened in 1958. He was head of the Biology Department before he became the academic Dean of Curriculum and Instruction.

When he retired from Dutchess, he became a Director of Special Projects writing grants for the Culinary Institute of America.

Dr. Monaco served as president of the parish council at Holy Trinity Church. He was also elected to the Poughkeepsie School Board where he served as president.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Rita of 58 years; his children, Vincent Monaco of Larchmont, NY, Martin Monaco and his wife Candice of NYC; Mary Morgan and her husband Rob, of South Bend, IN, Theresa Brown and her husband Mark, of Longmeadow, MA and Loretta Allen and her husband Neal, of Sturbridge, MA.

Dr. Monaco was also the adoring grandfather to 10 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

A burial service will be held at Calvary Cemetery at 62 LaGrange Ave., Poughkeepsie at 12:00 noon on Sat., March 16th.

Larry and I were part of the founding faculty at Dutchess Community College in Poughkeepsie, New York and I have known and admired Larry since 1958. He was an excellent teacher and colleague.

Dr Monaco was, indeed, my favorite College Professor. I was in his Anatomy and Physiology class. He enjoyed teaching so much and was so excited about the subject. I always remember him for the fine person he was. I know you will miss him greatly.
