Lewis William Lindsay

Millerton - A chapter completed, a page turned, a life well lived, and a rest well earned. Lewis William "Sonny" Lindsay, 94, a lifelong area resident died Friday, July 23, 2021 at The Pines at Poughkeepsie, Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation. Mr. Lindsay worked as a therapy aide at the former Harlem Valley Psychiatric Center in Wingdale, NY from 1949 to 1983. He was also a police officer for the Village of Millerton Police Department and served as Town Justice for the Town of North East for 22 years.

Born April 16, 1927 in Germantown, NY he was the son of the late Lewis W. and Bertha L. (Jackson) Lindsay, Sr. After graduating from Millerton High School, he served in the United States Navy from 1945 to 1946. On June 23, 1947 in Millbrook, NY he married Clara Reed a marriage that lasted over 58 years. Mrs. Lindsay died on July 10, 2005. Mr. Lindsay became a lifetime member of the following organizations throughout his life; Nimrod Lodge No. 96 of the Free and Accepted Masons, Dutchess County Police Benevolent Association, Millerton American Legion Post No. 178, AARP, Millerton Baptist Church and Central Baptist Church in Washington Hollow. He sponsored many local softball teams over the years and loved socializing and spending time with his beloved family and dear friends. He was also an avid deer hunter and fisherman in his spare time.

Mr. Lindsay is survived by three children, Lorraine B. Melton and her husband Donald of Poughkeepsie, Carol D. Cappillettie and her husband Ernest of Maryland and Alan L. Lindsay of Dover Plains; two grandchildren, Vachon Lyons and Jannel Wallace; six great grandchildren, Jared, Justin, Jada, Ameena and Najae and Lanaeya; seven great- great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, he was also predeceased by a grandson, Dwayne Melton in 2020 and four siblings, Betty Branche, Alaise Fowlkes, Ethel Harmon and Elmer Lindsay.

Calling hours will be held on Saturday, July 31, 2021 from 12pm to 1pm at the Scott D. Conklin Funeral Home, 37 Park Avenue, Millerton, NY. A funeral service will take place on Saturday, July 31, 2021 at 1pm at the funeral home. Burial with Naval Military Honors will follow at Irondale Cemetery in Millerton. Memorial contributions may be made to Millerton Legion Post No. 178, 155 Route 44, Millerton, NY 12546 or Millerton Fire Company, P.O. Box 733, Millerton, NY 12546.
