Mark Massey Obituary

Mark J. Massey

Wappingers Falls - Mark J. Massey, 47, a longtime Wappingers Falls resident formerly of Hyde Park, died unexpectedly Tuesday, November 29, 2011.

Born in Poughkeepsie on May 12, 1964, he was the son of the late Michael J. and Alice J. Ward Massey.

Mark attended St. Mary's School and Roy C. Ketcham High school, and continued his education at Dutchess Community College and SUNY New Paltz. He received his Bachelor's Degree in Human Services.

He was employed by the HRPC, Division for Youth, Rehab Services, Craig House, Dutchess County BOCES and most recently as a probation officer with the Dutchess County Department of Corrections and Probation.

Mark loved to travel, and with his wife saw many places together, and as a family, took many vacations together.

Mark's interests were football, baseball and painting pictures. He was an accomplished writer and published poet, and was a drummer in FTR, a local Hyde Park band, for several years. He also took piano lessons, and in his younger years, took flying lessons. An avid motorcyclist, he loved to ride.

Mark had a very sharp sense of wit, and loved to make people laugh.

On June 30, 1991, he married his best friend and soul mate, Catherine Percival, in the Village of Wappinger Falls. Mrs. Massey survives at home.

In addition to his wife, he is also survived by his very much loved son, Anthony T. Massey, who was the world to him, at home; step-children, Valerie L. Smith of Poughkeepsie, and Dean F. Smith Jr., of Surprise, AZ; granddaughter, Kalena J. Kulsha; three sisters, Maureen Simons and husband, Daniel, of Dover Plains, Donna Barton of Hyde Park, and Michele Massey of Poughkeepsie; two brothers, Michael Massey of Poughkeepsie, and John Massey; and six nephews, Richard and Chris Barton, and Salvatore, Daniel and Mark Simons, and John Tomlins.

There are no calling hours.

A Memorial Service will be held at 1 Pm, Sunday, December 4, 2011 at Sweet's Funeral Home, Inc., Rte. 9, Hyde Park. Rev. Arlene Dawber will officiate.

Dear Massey Family,
When I think of Mark I think of laughter. We grew up together – he taught me how to flip baseball cards, we would share the gum inside the package. To do this, we would “secretly” meet under the arch of the lilacs between my house and the cottage where Maureen lived, next door. Then your mom would
yell for Mark to come in and he would shout back just as loud as he could “WHAT!”
The secret was no more. That's just one memory – there are many more. He
was hilarious, mischievous, and sensitive. He is a soul to be missed. I cherish my memories and send all of you my deepest and heartfelt sympathy.
