Martha Healy Obituary

Martha Healy

- - Martha Healy, mother, grandmother, sister, mentor, and friend, died suddenly Friday, February 2, 2018 at St. Francis Hospital. She was 73. She is survived by her sister, Florence Wagman Roisman, of Indianapolis, Indiana; her three daughters, Karen Healy, of Hartford; Deborah Healy, of Winston Salem, North Carolina; and Sarah Eagan, of West Hartford. She is also survived by her grandchildren Michael Strumpf, Henry Eagan, and Grace Eagan; as well as a large extended family and a multitude of friends.

Martha was born in the Bronx in 1944 and grew to become a perpetual explorer. She once said, "the minute I hear a train whistle, I start to relax." She traveled the entire United States and Canada on the rails and, upon return, would regale family and friends with stories about seeing the fog settle in the valleys below Banff from the dining car of a passing Amtrak train.

She looked for new adventures at home, too. She graduated from Marist College with a degree in psychology and worked for IBM for many years. But when she left IBM in the early 90's, her new adventures began. She started her own editing and transcription business and took great pride and delight in doing transcription work for the University of Virginia - Miller Center presidential oral history project. She also did transcription work for historian Taylor Branch on his three-book series on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr and his book on the presidency of Bill Clinton. Through her work, Martha came to be an expert on the American presidency in the 20th century, though, due to confidentiality agreements, she couldn't tell anyone all that she knew. More impressively, she actually kept the secrets she was charged with keeping.

Martha was a passionate advocate for the rights of children and adults with disabilities as well as a staunch supporter of basic civil rights for all people. She was a soft-touch for anyone looking to find a home for physically disabled pets such as her beloved one-eyed cat and she was unable to say no to a loved one who needed help with a new project. Over the past year, she spent busy days enjoying Silver Sneakers exercise, a Mindfulness class, heading a support group for families that have a loved one with special needs, and of course, attending rallies for human rights. Along the way she found time to purchase numerous odd gadgets for family and friends, most recently a French fry pan at Ocean State Job Lot—something you never know you even needed!

She expressed love by doing, whether it was writing letters to her grandson Michael in North Carolina, playing backyard soccer with grandson Henry, taking walks with granddaughter Grace, or simply making the world's greatest chicken soup when someone she loved came down with a cold. She was quick to brag about the accomplishments of her family and friends and she was the centerpiece of family connections that spread from Connecticut to Canada through the Midwest and out to California.

She will be deeply missed.

Visiting hours will be Thursday from 4-8 p.m. at Taylor & Modeen Funeral Home, 136 South Main Street in West Hartford. A memorial service will be held Friday, February 9th at 10 a.m. at the Universalist Church, 433 Fern Street, West Hartford, Connecticut. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, the American Civil Liberties Union, or any organization seeking to protect human rights and freedoms.

This might be a little late, however I just received the news of Martha's passing. Martha 's family and my family were very close when we lived in the Bronx. We stayed close through the years. Martha taught me medical transcription and a chance to work at home while raising my son. I made many trips to to her home in Westchester County. I am very thankful for her patience and guidance. As is the case with many people we lost our connection when I moved to California. I have thought of her and her daughters and wondered how they all were.
If any daughters see my email address please send me an email. I would love to hear from you.
I am very sad at her passing.

I never had the opportunity to meet Martha in person, but I got to know her through her posts on the Facebook group, America`s Amtrak. She was a truly unique woman who was fascinating to talk to, even if it was online. I wish that I was able to attend the service for Martha, however, I am currently in Toulouse, France. Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with all of you. Wherever Martha is now, you can be sure it`s riding the rails and taking it all in to weave into a fascinating story for when we see her again. Everyone who knew Martha is richer for having had the opportunity to know her.

I'm sorry to hear of this. I worked with Martha for a number of years and enjoyed her wit, humor, and innovation. She was a mentor to me at work and I was very fond of her. I think she's a person who touched many lives.

Like so many others, I "met" Martha on Facebook through our mutual love of rail travel. Martha's passion for life, adventurous spirit, generosity and boundless curiosity were contagious and inspiring. We will miss you greatly, Martha. Meet you in the Sightseer someday. Enjoy your eternal ride.

I met Martha five years ago in the Metro Lounge at Chicago's Union Station. I was waiting to take my first trip in sleeper on the Texas Eagle. Lucky me, she was not only on the same train, but the same car! She showed me the ropes of traveling in sleeper, and we share meals and many hours of conversation on that trip. She was making mittens with a string between them so they wouldn't get lost for the grandkids. She loved telling me about them and her children, and how proud she was of all of them and their accomplishments. When it was time for me to get off the train in Fort Worth, we exchanged numbers and hugs, and she told me I should join the new Facebook page she had started with a friend called, The Amtrak Pros, which I did. We organized MeetUps in Chicago and spent days wandering the city with other train friends from Facebook. There were MeetUps in other cities too, and I saw her many times over these years. I had always hoped to come east and she was going to show me D.C. and other historic places. I suppose when I go, she will be there alongside me in spirit now. You were all so blessed to have her in your life. She was a wonderful lady and I hope these wishes bring a smile to your heart in these days learning to live without dear Martha; aléha hashalóm.
