Olga Carmel Obituary

Olga M. Carmel

Poughkeepsie - Olga (Ollie) Maria Carmel, a long-time resident of Poughkeepsie NY, passed away peacefully at Vassar Brothers Medical Center, on May 29, 2021. Olga was born to Jacob and Mary Wowk on September 9, 1925. She was one of seven children.

She graduated from Pittsfield MA High School and attended Tucker School. Upon graduation, Olga was employed for a number of years at General Electric Corp, Pittsfield MA.

In 1951, she married Donald L. Carmel, of Dalton, MA, and they had three children.

Olga is predeceased by her husband of 50 years, who passed away from Alzheimer's disease in 2001; her brother Nicholas VanWowk; sisters, Stephanie Zack and Sadie Wowk; and twin sister and brother, Jane and John Wowk.

Olga is survived by a wonderful and close family:

Son, Donald L. Carmel Jr. and wife, Nancy, of New Canaan, Ct., their children, Alexander, Krista, Maria and great grandchildren, Jaxon, Grace and Cooper.

Daughter, Denise Marie and husband Jerome Martin of Wappinger Falls, NY, their children, Meghan, Colin, Kiersten, Caitlin and great granddaughter, Brylee.

Son, Bruce G. Carmel of Poughkeepsie NY and children Jordan and Katrina.

Olga's 98-year-old sister, Katherine and her 97-year-old husband Anthony Maggiacomo.

Nephew's, Michael Dean and Thomas Zack; Gary and wife, Margarite VanWowk; Ronald VanWowk and children Matthew and Francine.

When her husband joined IBM Corp in the late 1950's, they moved to Hyde Park and then Poughkeepsie NY. In addition to raising a family, Olga was employed at the Amrita Club and Alex Brown and Sons. Olga and her family attended St. Marin DePorres Parish, dating back to its original opening in the 1960's and she was a member of their Seniors Club, where she enjoyed making rosary beads that were donated to churches around the world.

Her family meant the world to her and spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren was her greatest pleasure. Upon retirement, she traveled with her husband and family to many foreign countries, from Asia to Europe. Visiting Lhasa Tibet and Kathmandu Nepal were some of her most exciting adventures. And of course, she enjoyed watching her grandchildren play at school sporting events. She also loved to ski, sing and was an avid reader. She maintained a Facebook page and texted/emailed her grandchildren until several weeks before she passed away.

Olga will be greatly missed by her friends and family and she will always be remembered. A private memorial service, limited to her immediate family was conducted on 1 June 2021. She was interred next to her husband, at Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery, Poughkeepsie, NY. Arrangements were under the direction of the Wm. G. Miller & Son FH, Inc., 371 Hooker Ave., Poughkeepsie, NY 12603.
