Otto Mahn Obituary

Otto Mahn

HOPEWELL JUNCTION - Otto Mahn, 75, a resident of the Town of Beekman, died on Thursday, March 24, 2011, at St. Francis Hospital, Hartford, CT, as a result of complications of an aortic aneurism.

Born on August 15, 1935 in Hamburg, Germany, Otto was the son of Franz and Lotte Mahn. At age 15, while attending school in Germany, he began his formal training to become a butcher. After completing his training, he worked on cruise ships for several years.

On a stop in New York, Otto was recruited by a restaurateur and made America his home in 1958. He started his own butcher business in Queens and later moved it to Brewster and then to Dutchess County. His East Fishkill Pork Store thrived as a result of his capable business management as well as his unfailing commitment to quality and topnotch customer service. He sold the business and retired in 2006.

Otto married Melitta Klinger, who survives at home, on November 26, 1961, and was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather.

An avid sailor and hunter, Otto enjoyed the outdoors. He also passionately followed World Cup Soccer and was active in the Elks Club and the Germania Society.

In addition to his wife, Melitta, Otto is survived by his daughter, Susan Cooper and her husband, Gary, of Pine Plains; his son, Michael and his wife, Barbara, of Hopewell Junction; his two grandchildren, Justin and Michael Cooper of Pine Plains; his two sisters, Christa and Marga, both in Germany; and many close friends who were blessed to know him.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, March 29th from 2 to 4pm and 6 and 8pm at Horn & Thomes, Inc. Funeral Home, 83 East Main Street, Pawling. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11am on Wednesday, March 30th at St. John's Church, 39 East Main Street, Pawling. Interment in the South Dover Rural Cemetery in Wingdale will immediately follow the church service.

The Mahn family would like to express their deepest gratitude to the Millbrook Rescue Squad and all the nurses and doctors at Sharon Hospital and St. Francis Hospital.

Dear Melitta,
I learned of Otto's passing from fellow Postmaster Dave Edmonds.I want you to know that for the years I knew Otto and you from the deli and painting for you at home and the deli complex, Otto was to me, a man who I respected, for his work ethics, his love for his family, and for making my family feel welcome each and every time we shopped at your store. He would always call me "young man"and my wife and kids "young lady"! Which meant he looked through a persons exterior to see the youth in all of us.He was a big part of the fabric of Poughquag, and will be missed.
Our prayers are out to him for a peaceful life in Heaven, and out to you for the strength to carry on his love of family.

Our sincere condolences to Melitta and family.
Otto was a straight-shooter with humor
during the many years I knew him.
He was able to set aside memories of the terrible bombing raids on his native city during WW2, when he was only a child.
May he have the well deserved rest, R.I.P.
