Paul Harris Obituary

Paul Miller Harris departed to Heaven on January 5, 2011. He was born in Poughkeepsie, New York on June 26,1946 to the late LoUella Harris and William Harris, Sr. Paul was raised and continued his residence in Poughkeepsie. He was educated inthe Poughkeepsie School System for Elementary and High School.

During his youth, he kept money in his pocket because everyone in town depended on him to shovel the never-endiing snow. As he matured, he worked as a bouncer at a local establishment and later in his life; he was employed by Vassar Brothers Hospital in the Maintenance Department.

Paul's trademark as an adult was his dreadlocks, but as a young man, he was clean cut, kept the looks of a business man and would never be caught without his briefcase. His favorite sport was football and his passion was deep for the game. Anyone would have thought the was a part of the NFL with the Oakland Raiders.

Paul was a character by all who knew him and was an "unsung hero". He even received a bravery medal from the Poughkeepsie Police Department in the 1950's for saving a boy's life who was drowning in the local creek. He always came when it was not expected to help out in all situations. He was the Poughkeepsie's Knight in Shining Armor.

Paul was sweet as a "teddy bear" but had a roar like a lion. He meant what he said and he said what he meant. His smile will continue to light up our hearts and his personality to warm the town of Poughkeepsie. He will live on for enternity in our hearts.

Preceeding Paul's passing were his two brothers, Nathaniel L. Harris Sr. and Benjamin F. Harris; and two nephews, Nathaniel Harris, Jr. and Gary Harris.

He leaves behind his lovely family; one brother, William Harris, Jr.; three sisters, Mary A. Dickens, Jeanette C. Harris-Odenbrett and Ruby L. Harris-White; five nieces, Sharon Harris, Karen Harris, Novella Dickens, Augustina Odenbrett, Laura Odenbrett; four nephews, Michael Harris, Demetrius Dickens, Maneul Harris-Lopes, Eugene Odenbrett; one great nephew, Jeremiah Dickens; one great niece, Janoa Watson; special cousins, Dorothy Didymus, Barbara Ann Jones, Henry "Tank" McCue and a host of other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be held on Monday, Jan. 10, 2011 from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Bethel Church of God in Christ, 91 Hooker Ave., Poughkeepsie.

Funeral services will follow visitiation at 11 a.m, Pastor Dwight Hunt will officiate.

Burial will follow in New Paltz Rural Cemetery.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Joseph J. Darrow, Sr. Funeral Home, Inc., 39 So. Hamilton St. Poughkeepsie.

I only knew Paul briefly when I was a student at New Paltz in the mid 70s. I vividly remember him in that gorilla suit and the crazy horns sitting in a lounge chair directing traffic on Main Street. He was quite the character, but there was a whole other side to him too. I´ve thought of him many times over the years. Though he was only 7 or 8 years older I thought of him as a wise older sage at times. That is how I will always remember him and glad that I knew him for that short time.

I worked at The Chance and when he would come bye he would always say "Hey White Boy". I went to high school with Gary Harris, a relative of Paul. He was an honest man. Truth counts.

Known you since I was 5 years old, that was back in '67. Hadn't changed a bit in all that time. You were a dear friend, and you'll forever be in my families heart.

I just heard the news (6 months later), very sad to see him go but happy he is going Home. My brother took a very nice black and white picture of him over 15 years ago on Academy St. wearing his straw hat, I wish I had it now to post up here. Jirel if you're reading this scan that photo and post that please for our cuz! Little known fact: He was an expert foot masseur (women only!), he inspired my pops with his foot fetish ways to open up his own business doing the very same! R.I.P. Paul!

I have many memories of Paul and it was not until I was older that I began to understand how smart he really was... definately missed.

I remember Paul from when I was a young girl. He would walk all through Poughkeepsie talking to people and sometimes just sang songs as he walked. He never seemed to forget people's faces as I always remember him calling me by my name. I remember Paul as I grew up and then again in my now middle age years. Paul never asked for anything but always had words of Wisdom to offer. Some people thought of Paul as a "crazy person" and those were the people that didn't know Paul. If you knew Paul from while growing up you eventually found out the story of his life and why he chose "His" path. It was a sad story that was up to Paul to tell. I put in quotes "His" path for two reason's.. 1. Was because of Paul's path and 2. "His" as in God knew Paul's true heart and how much he helped people through the years! "You truly will be missed Paul" Kathie

Paul, I remember you as a kid wearing a gorilla suit on rollers skates..or those famous horns..some asked why are you talking to that crazy fool? I replied because he has more wisdom, integrity and humanity than you can comprehend. Paul went to school with my eldest sister and always addressed my Mom as Miss Olga..even though that was not her name.
I remember talking with him for hours on park bench in the freezing cold never asking for anything and always offering what ever he had.
Paul I will always remember you in my heart and consider it an honor to have known such a great man.. you will be sorely missed by all.

I had so many conversations will Paul and they were never dull. He was a very smart, kind and loving man. I went through a lot when I was a teenager and he always said the right things and helped me out with his encouraging words. I will miss how he smiled and would wink at me every time he saw me or how he would say, "I told you were going to be fine". You surely will be missed, God Bless and rest in peace Paul. Much love

Very intelligent teddy bear...at first Paul could come across a little intimidating (especially to a child such as myself at the time).I was standing at the bus stop,I see Paul approaching. It was early in the morning. Just him & me. I was a litle scared but I refused to let him know it. He asked me what was the book I had in my hand. I told him I had an English exam & had to remember a poem by Robert Frost. Wouldn't you know Paul recited the entire poem. Tilted his sombrero & bid me a good day. That was my biggest life lesson that we shouldn't judge a book by its cover. LOVE & MISS YOU PAUL!!!! Paul Poughkeepsie will not be the same without you. In 1976 I had my first child. I was proudly walking him down the mall and Paul said let me see him its about time you had that baby. He picked up my son Johnny and stared in to his eyes . Put him back in the stroller then took out a pencil and wrote a poem it was beautiful I still have it to this day. Every time i saw paul I always told him i still had it ,he would smile and nod his head saying good. I will miss him. He was a lot of things to a lot of people rest in peace my friend until we meet again. Kathy m

January 14, 2011

Paul...although he was older than I...my childhood days were spent in the "YARD" (140 1/2 Church Street). Paul terrorized me almost daily and it wasn't until I grew up that I realized that he was a "Teddy Bear" and wouldn't hurt a fly. He kept me in line and alway had my back. What a big personality Paul had...I can still see him wearing the horned hat. Paul was Poughkeepsie and Poughkeepsie was Paul. "May your soul rest in peace." Sherry Davis Woods (Charlotte, NC)

January 14, 2011

I remember Paul from my childhood when he would wear his "buffalo hat "and that would bring great joy to the kids in my area,Paul you will be greatly missed,GOD Bless you.....

I remember Paul from about 12 years up to having my own family and wanted to give my condolences. He never forgot anyone or missed a trick. He always would talk to me and my mom since I was a child until I saw him one time and told him she had passed. He was something! He was quite the character. He is an icon in Poughkeepsie and will definitely be remembered and missed by my generation. Paul, R.I.P

Paul, You are sorely missed by all your friends. You knew everybody. You knew their names. You would always speak to all your friends and even if you well not feeling well, you would always make an efford to speak to us. From your days in Pok High School, to roller skating to the Vikings....you loved everyone and everyone loved you. You Paul are truly one of a kind, and that is the kind heart you had. All of Poughkeepsie misses you as do all your friends who now live out of town. You will forever be in the hearts of all who knew you. My brother Cliff told me about your passing Jan 11, Paul, and I immediately saw your picture in Poughkeepsie of those pleasant years growing up. I could hear you calling Susan Mills and the Dors' boys Clifton and Vincent while walking Gate St. Riverview Field did not need lights when PHS would play football or the gathering of friends while you were there. Your presence was like a beacon. You have touched many lives throughout your beautiful life in Poughkeepsie. The Poughkeepsie ICON is gone but not forgotten from the many streets you had walked and told of many stories. Paul, you were a unique individual and we were blessed to know you.

I knew Paul since I was a teenager. As I grew up got married, more then once, he always asked me how my current wife(by name) and hoe the children were doing. He always knew ther names when he asked and as the years passed he always knew their approximate ages. Then he would ask about the former wife. He never forgot a detail, simply amazing. One he had Pink Eye and one of mt=y kids had an unfinished tube. He let me put it in his eyes for about and finally he was cured. He used to tell people that I saved his life! He might have gone blind but he wouls have lived I would tell people. Fora man that was not my family and not a regular type friend, I truly felt love for the man. I will miss him for all the days of my life. Paul may you finally be at rest, one and for all!!!!

Remember

Remember me when I am gone away,
Gone far away into the silent land;
When you can no more hold me by the hand,
Nor I half turn to go yet turning stay.
Remember me when no more day by day
You tell me of our future that you plann'd:
Only remember me; you understand
It will be late to counsel then or pray.
Yet if you should forget me for a while
And afterwards remember, do not grieve:
For if the darkness and corruption leave
A vestige of the thoughts that once I had,
Better by far you should forget and smile
Than that you should remember and be sad.
