Robert J. Rathjen

Philipstown, NY - Robert J. Rathjen, age 81, a lifelong area resident, died on Saturday, January 24, 2015, at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie, NY. Born in Cold Spring, NY, on December 1, 1933 he was the son of the late Theodore and Agnes Vera (Mekeel) Rathjen. He was pre deceased his wives Carolyn V. (Mason) Rathjen in 1990 and Sally (Arthur) Rathjen in 2014.

Mr. Rathjen was a retired Wood Worker with Carpenters Union Local # 1134 and he later worked at his son's business, Hudson Highlands Home Improvements in Beacon. A lifelong Philipstown resident he was a direct descendant of Thomas Davenport one of the first settlers to the Town of Philpstown. An avid reader he possessed great knowledge and appreciation of local history. He enjoyed the great outdoors and was a member the Garrison Fish and Game club, Garrison Volunteer Fire Company, Garrison Volunteer Ambulance Corps., and veteran of the U.S.A.F.

His family was his greatest joy and he held tremendous pride for each of his children. Survivors include two sons Theodore E. (Chrissy) Rathjen of Garrison, NY; Barron L. (Krissy) Rathjen of Wappingers Falls, NY; two daughters Janie A. Rathjen of Cold Spring, NY; Lisa R. Light of Cold Spring, NY; one stepson David (Stacy) Sajdak of LaGrange, NY and one sister Isabel Smith of Manchester by the Sea, MA. One of his greatest pleasures was his eighteen grandchildren and four great grandchildren whom he adored.

Private cremation has taken place at the Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery. A memorial services will take place at St. Philip's in the Highlands Episcopal Church, 1101 Route 9D, Garrison, NY at 11:00am, Saturday, January 31, 2015. The Rev. Francis Geer will officiate.

Funeral arrangements are in the care of the Clinton Funeral Home, Cold Spring, NY.
