Gordon Cantor Obituary

Gordon N. Cantor, 81, died on Saturday, February 7, 2009 at Windmill Manor in Coralville. No services are planned at this time. Gordon's body was donated to The Department of Anatomy at The University of Iowa. Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service is in charge of the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Iowa City New Horizons Band in care of the Iowa City/Johnson County Senior Center.
Born and raised in Syracuse, NY, Gordon received his BA and MA degrees from Syracuse University and a PhD from The University of Iowa. From 1954 to 1960, he was a faculty member at George Peabody College in Nashville, TN. For the remainder of his academic career, he was on the faculty of The University of Iowa. His field was child development. After retiring in 1989, he was employed for two years in the advertising department of the Iowa City Press-Citizen. He was a Navy veteran and a member of several professional organizations. At The University of Iowa, Gordon played an active role in early efforts to protect the rights of human subjects in research. He was author or co-author of some 50 articles published in professional journals.
He married Nancy Knight Alton on August 7, 1982.
Survivors include his sister, Joyce Levy of Baldwinsville, NY, his daughter Janet (David) Dement of Chester, AR, his son David Cantor of Honolulu, HI, two granddaughters Renee McKean and Katie Dement, and one great-granddaughter Alexis Grace Gabucci. Also surviving are his wife Nancy, four step-children; Jay Alton, Drew (Julie) Alton, Sharon (Jennifer) Alton and Sarah (John) Weber, and four step-grandchildren; Andie, Kai, Kaylyn and Chance Alton. Gordon was preceded in death by his parents Jesse and Mollie (Shopiro) Cantor and three step-grandchildren; Luke, Xavier and Seth Alton.
