As a reporter for the Gazette and, before that, the Des Moines Register, I occasionally would get calls from Jim about a news story in the Iowa City area. It seemed like Jim knew everything that was going on, both in public and behind the scenes. I always enjoyed his straight talk and dry sense of humor. A couple of weeks before he died, I think I saw him being pushed in a wheelchair on the path through Willow Creek Park. I was riding my bike and I wasn't sure it was him, so I did not stop to say hello. I wish I had. I'm very sorry for your loss.

Jim was my uncle. It was always pleasent when I saw him. He was generous and kind. I remember he lived out in the country and we would look out at the stars with his telescope. He liked to cook and we could sit around and talk for hours. It was so long ago that we got together and I'm just really sad now that he's gone there will not be another time to see him. I wish i could have seen him at least one more time. My condolences to his wife and family. Rest in peace.
