Mr. Anthony P. Squillace
Johnson City and Utica, N.Y.Mr. Anthony P. Squillace, 85, of Utica passed away with his devoted daughter and son-in-law, by his side on Friday, March 4, 2005 at the James G. Johnston Nursing Home in Johnson City, New York. Anthony was born in Utica, March 8, 1919, a son of the late Peter and Santa (Parotta) Squillace. He was educated in local schools and was a graduate of UFA. On August 24, 1946, Anthony married Josephine Ruscito and enjoyed a close and loving marriage of over forty-three years. His beloved Josephine passed away on December 6, 1989. He served in the US Army during WWII at the rank of Staff Sergeant. Anthony was very much a business entrepreneur who worked as a calf dealer for over fifteen years. He also owned and operated Charlotte Liquors in Utica for many years. Mr. Squillace served as City of Utica Codes Director in the early 1980's and bought and sold real estate locally in Utica. Anthony was a past member of the Utica Lions Club, Sons of Italy and Knights of St. John. Anthony's great passion and joy in his later life were his two grandsons Jeffrey and Brandon Westfall. A devoted family man, he is survived by his beloved daughter and son-in-law, Roberta and Kevin Westfall of Vestal, NY; his beloved grandsons, Jeffrey Richard Westfall and Brandon Joseph Westfall; his sister, Connie Ciccarelli; his brother, Joseph Squillace; a very special and devoted sister-in-law, Betty Poccia; two sisters-in-law, Rosemary Squillace and Caroline Squillace; also many nieces, nephews, cousins and many, many cherished friends. Anthony is predeceased by his two sons, Robert and Richard; as well as his sisters and brothers-in-law, Mr. & Mrs. Frank Buttiglieri, Mr. & Mrs. Victor Tocco and Mr. & Mrs. Tony Bartolotti; two brothers and a sister-in-law Mr. & Mrs. Ralph Squillace and Mr. Guy Squillace; his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Mr. & Mrs. Arthur Ameduri and Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Ruscito and his best friend and brother-in-law Mr. Nick Poccia.
His funeral will be held on Tuesday at 9:30 am from The Matt Funeral Home and at 10:30 am at St. Anthony of Padua Church with Military Honors at the conclusion of mass. Entombment will be in the family mausoleum in St. Agnes Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call on Monday (Today) from 2-4 and 7-9 pm at The Matt Funeral Home, 700 Rutger St. at Mohawk St. in Utica. The family would like to offer their special thanks to Dr. Kent Struck and to the kind and loving staff of the James G. Johnston Nursing Home and Hilltop Retirement Center in Johnson City, New York for the compassionate care shown to Anthony over the last two years he has resided there. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations in Anthony's memory to the American Diabetes Society. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home. The Knights of St. John- St. Anthony Commandry #385 will meet this evening at the funeral home for ritualistic services at 7:30 pm.
