Spc. Isaac Michael Nieves
of Sidney, N.Y.Spc. Isaac Michael Nieves, 20, of Sidney, N.Y., was killed in action April 8, 2004 when his combat patrol was attacked in Bani Saad, Iraq. He was born October 5, 1983 son of Gilbert and Maria C. Nieves in Ohio. Isaac graduated from Sidney High School in 2001, where he played football, track and field, and was the captain of the wrestling team his senior year. He also was very active in the color guard with his future wife, Amy. Isaac was very service oriented; he was an Eagle Scout with Boy Scout Troop 88 in Sidney and an alter boy at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, where he was a member. After graduation, Isaac entered the United States Army on August 10, 2001. His occupational skill was 21B Combat Engineer. Spc. Nieves was assigned to the 82nd Engineer Battalion stationed in Germany. He was deployed to Kosovo and then to Iraq. Spc. Isaac Nieves has been awarded the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, the National Defense Service Medal and the Go To War On Terrorism Service Medal posthumously. He is survived by wife, Amy Nieves; parents, Gilbert and Maria Nieves; grandmother, Alice Freeman; sister and brother-in-law, Maria and Dan Wayman, United States Air Force; sisters, Priscilla, Gwendolyn, Kimberly, Doreen, Victoria Nieves; brothers, Gilberto, Cadet at West Point, Kevin, and Nicholas Nieves; brothers, Gilbert Davilla and Trosky Davilla; father and mother-in-law, Thomas and LuAnn Holdrege; sister-in-law, Erin Holdrege; Amy's grandmother, Doris Smith; Amy's uncles, Steven and Paula Smith, and Timothy and Kathleen Cole-Smith, Commander United States Navy, Ret.; several aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Friends may call Monday, April 19, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. The family will be in attendance from 5-8 p.m. at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, N.Y. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, April 20, at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 15 Liberty St., Sidney. Rev. Fr. Gordon Polenz will officiate. Burial with military honors will be private in the Gerald B. H. Solomon-Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville, N.Y.
