David Gates Obituary

Gates, David F.

Dec. 8, 1947-April 2, 2015

David Frederick Gates, 67, passed away peacefully at Wilson Memorial Hospital on Thursday, April 2, 2015, surrounded by close friends and family. Born December 8, 1947 in Binghamton, he grew up in Whitney Point and Conklin, eventually marrying Madeline Gates and raising a family in Windsor. David served in the US Marine Corps from 1968 to 1970 and proudly served in the Vietnam War. He loved fishing and hunting with his friends and nephews on his 42 acre property in Windsor, as well as playing in the Anne Road Dart League at the "Sugar Shack." He could often be found entertaining friends at the Outer Limits bar in Conklin, not far from his childhood home on Telegraph Street. "Gatesey" was known for his incredible sense of humor, his knack for embarrassing his children, and for having friends everywhere. David is predeceased by his mother, Lucille Gates, his father Donald Gates, and stepmother Esther Gates. He is survived by his three daughters, Alyssa Gates and Katie Monahan of Highland, NY, Corinne and Kevin Austin of Binghamton, and Laura Gates and Richard Weeks of Binghamton. He is also survived by his brother, Bob and Carol Gates, his sisters, Dolores and Joe Marrongelli, and Bonnie Gates, as well as many wonderful nieces and nephews. Services will be held on Tuesday, April 7, 2015 at Wm R. Chase and Son Funeral Home 737 Chenango St. Port Dickinson with the family receiving friends from 4-7 p.m., a military honors service at 7 p.m., followed by sharing and remembrance until 8 p.m. Memorial donations can be made to the Vietnam Veterans of America, 8719 Colesville Road, Suite 100, Silver Spring, MD 20910 or on the web at http://vva.org/support.html.

Memories of Dave always make me smile. One of the best memories is listening to the story of roadside rabbit hunting expedition and the subsequent sharing of the rabbit stew and cold beers at Gahagans. Rest in peace Dave. Bonnie, sorry for your loss. Curt.

Bonnie,
I'm so sorry to hear about Gatesy. So many great memories come to mind - a bunch of us camping every Sat. on the state lands back in the 70s, Little Jewel and OL days, numerous parties, etc. He was one of the funniest and nicest guys I know - always making people laugh. He'll be missed by many, but he'll never be forgotten....that's for sure! My thoughts are with all Gatesy's family and friends.

We would like to express our deepest regrets to the entire Gates family. My wife and I go back a long ways to when The Gates family lived on Telegraph St. in Binghamton. Diane has always been close friends with Dolores and David used to help me deliver newspapers. David ran around with me and we often went hunting together. He was a great guy and fun to be with. We are all going to miss him. Rest in peace Dave. Bob and Diane Geranis

To the whole family of my good friend Gatesy, I have known him for around 50 years, we have worked together, fished for hours together, hunted together, partied together and just been good friends for years. I have been fortunate to meet most of his family. My heart goes out to them all. I am sure he will be sadly missed. I too will miss him, we had some great times and we always laughed together the whole time. Again Lizzie and I send love and prayers to you all, God Bless. John and Elizabeth Cammer
