Edward Fetzko Obituary

Edward J. Fetzko
of Binghamton
Edward "Ed" Joseph Fetzko, 69, of Binghamton, went home to our Lord on Monday, November 2, 2009, at Meriter Hospital in Madison, WI. Ed was hospitalized while visiting his son Mark in Madison in mid-October. He had battled non-Hodgkins lymphoma valiantly for nearly ten years. Ed was born May 5, 1940 in Shamokin, PA, a son of the late Thomas and Mary (Bednarczyk) Fetzko. Ed was a member of the Shamokin High School Class of 1958, and a graduate of Bloomsburg State and Cortland State Universities. A mathematics teacher for 36 years, Ed retired in June 1998 from Chenango Forks High School. In addition to teaching, he pursued his lifelong passion for sports as "Coach Fetz," beginning his coaching career as JV basketball coach (1962-1963); junior high wrestling coach (1964-1966); and junior high football coach (1964-1965). Ed coached JV football from 1965-1998 and was JV baseball coach from 1962-1983. As JV football coach, his teams experienced four undefeated seasons, but Ed cherished his players equally whether 0-9 or 9-0. While he enjoyed football, his first love was baseball. After over 20 years at the junior varsity level, he assumed head varsity baseball coach duties from 1983-1998, winning multiple division titles in the old "Sus" league and STAC ('88, '95, '96). Under his leadership, the Blue Devils also won Section IV championships in 1987 and 1988, progressing to the sectional finals again in 1989 before losing to Maine-Endwell. Ed's most accomplished team advanced to the state final in 1987, falling in a spirited 6-5 contest to champion Shoreham Wading River, a team led by future major leaguer Keith Osik. After retiring from teaching, Coach Fetz's final years as a coach were spent at Johnson City High School. He was the head JV baseball coach from 1999-2004, assisting with the varsity during the post-season. As an assistant, he helped contribute to JC's 1999 state championship run, earning the ring that eluded him 20 years earlier. In and outside of the classroom and field, Ed will forever be remembered for his booming voice, huge heart, constant quest for excellence, and eclectic, yet wonderful, sense of humor. Coach Fetz had an amazing ability to motivate and inspire his students and athletes to overcome challenges and to set and achieve their goals, all the while having fun. Outside of work, Ed was a devoted father and husband as well as an avid sports fan and prolific reader. He loved to spend time with his family near and far, traveling across the country and to Europe multiple times. With a zeal for life and learning, Ed accumulated many different hobbies throughout his 69 years. He was a talented golfer and successfully shot a hole-in-one. In the winter, Ed regularly hit the ski slopes at Greek Peak Ski Resort, where he was a season-pass holder after running the Chenango Forks Ski Club for many years. After retirement, he especially enjoyed playing pitch with his card group. Throughout his life, Ed had a servant's heart, regularly helping family, friends and neighbors in need. Ed leaves his loving wife, Mary Lou; three daughters, Christine, Karen and Stephanie; son, Mark; son-in-law, Christian Schulz; granddaughter, Sophia Schulz; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary Anne and John Jayman of Baltimore, MD, and Barbara and John Gotaskie of Sunbury, PA; one brother and sister-in-law, Phil and Jean Fetzko of Kreamer, PA; mother-in-law, Mary Wyszkowski of Whitney Point, NY; sister and brother-in-law, Patricia and Rahn Lawton of Binghamton, NY; nieces and nephews, John R. Jayman, Barbara Jude Jayman, John Gotaskie Jr., Jeffrey Gotaskie, Jennifer Fetzko, Mary Ellen Fetzko, Diane Wettig, Phillip Fetzko, and Alexis and Tyler Lawton; two great-nieces, Gabby and Alexis Wettig; two great-nephews, John Richard and Joseph Jayman; and several cousins. He is predeceased by brother, Thomas A. Fetzko. He was lovingly supported in his final days by Meredith Sax Bourne and Patrick Pilie, the girlfriend and boyfriend of his youngest two children, Mark and Stephanie. Ed was a devout Catholic and was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Church after years of attendance at St. Christopher's. He enjoyed praying the Rosary. Ed will be forever cherished by his dear family, friends and former colleagues and students. God Grant Him Eternal Rest.
A Funeral Mass will be offered at St. Mary of the Assumption Church, Binghamton, Saturday at 1 p.m. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Johnson City. The family will receive friends at the J.A. McCormack Sons Funeral Home, 141 Main Street, Binghamton, Friday from 4-8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions in Ed's memory be made to Lymphoma Research Foundation, 1115 Broadway, 13th Floor, New York, NY 10006; or Meriter Foundation Inc., 202 S. Park St. Madison, WI 53715 using the Gift Designation.

Dear Fetzko family,

Doing some online nostalgia this evening, and I am so sorry to read of Ed's loss. As a friend and baseball teammate of Mark (and an "adopted member" of your family aka the kid who was always around) from about 1988-1991, your dad was very formidable in my life. I always looked up to him and he was 100% a hero of mine during those years.

I hope Marylou, Mark, Karen, Stephanie and the rest of the family are all doing great, and know your dad was always very well respected.

I just learned of Mr. Fetzko's passing. My prayer is that God has given you peace. He was a wonderful and spirited teacher. He inspired me to pursue teaching in my undergrad work, however, psychology grabbed me. I am into my 44 year as a Regional Consultant/social worker specializing in child protective services. I am blessed to have known him.

When I think back to high school (class of '87) I have such great memories and many of them are with the Fetz. I had the pleasure of having him as a math teacher and J.V. football coach. His ability to engage every student was unmatched (even trouble makers like me). His Fetz-isms last a lifetime with his students. I can still hear his powerful voice and that says a lot about him. The success of the C.F. football program could be attributed to the Fetz. By the time athletes played varsity, they made it thru Fetz's J.V. system in which his leadership was outstanding. The education world could use so many more great teachers like the Fetz. His C.F. legacy will live on forever!

As a former student of his from the early 70's, I am sad to hear of Mr. Fetzko's passing. He was an excellent caring teacher, patient and kind, but persistant in making a point and making sure that everyone in the class learned. We need more people like him on this planet.
My condolences to the family.

Coach, RIP lot's of memories!!! My deepest condolences to your family!!!

November 21, 2009

I just found out about Mr Fetzko's passing. Reading all the memories everyone wrote about bring back so many of my own. I used keep the tradition my brother started by taking in Kolocki, holupki and whatever other polish foods my mother would make. He was a great teacher, made learning math so much fun. My stepson could use a math teacher like Mr Fetzko as he has a hard time with algebra. I remember when he would talk to me in Polish the little I knew and the class would just look at us and say what?
My best to his family I know how much he will be missed, my thoughts and prayers.

Coach Fetz was a great coach, math teacher, and person who had a big influence beyond the classroom or football field. He taught me my first audible at the line of scrimmage, that being a jump pass to either tight end with the audible being "Pizza pie", the right end being "anchovies" and the left end being "mushrooms". Whitney Point never did figure it out. He also made math more fun than ever orginally envisioned by the scholars. And special memories of trips to visit Mom Fetzko for Sunday dinner in Shamokin and another to old Yankee Stadium the day they retired Mickey Mantle's jersey. We'll miss you Coach. Our most sincere condolences to the family.

To the Fetzko Family:
Mr. Fetzko was one of the funniest teachers I have ever had. Every day in class he would make you laugh with all his quirky sayings. He would take the time to help his students whenever it was needed. Mr. Fetzko was a great teacher, coach and man.

I will never forget the experience of the '87 baseball team, I will cherish that memory for the rest of my life.

My condolences to you all.

I saw of your husband's passing and just wanted to express our sympathy to you and your family. I didn't realize Ed was a Bloom graduate as well. I graduated from Bloom in 1971 and met you when you subbed at WP for Mary Ellen Lane. I retired from WP in 2002 after 31 years. Dotty and I also chaperoned the ski club at Greek Peak.

It was very sad news to learn of Mr. Fetzko's passing. I truly believe there will never be another like him. He was creative, unique, caring and passionate about his teachings. He is a legend in his own right. Thank you Mr. Fetzko for without you, and all of the dedication you put into my "remedial", I never would have passed my Regents. My sincerest condolences to the Fetzko family. You've indeed made it to the top!

My most heart felt condolences to all of you.

I am encouraged to write this message to all of you to express my feelings on Ed's passing. He was a husband, father, teacher and best friend to many of us.

When speaking of memories, we all have many. My memories were simular to everyone elses; Best ever Teacher, and a great friend, with a sense of humor that overrode all that is not right in our world. His booming, attention grabing voice in the middle of my back swing :) was always forgiven.

Again, Ed will be sorrily missed, and I am eternally thankful for his gift of friendship.

As a middle school math teacher in Charlotte, NC, I find myself repeating the same goofy sayings Mr. Fetzko used to use with my class. I never thought I would hear them coming out of my mouth because at the time when I was in the peanut gallery, I thought they were so ridiculous. One day, I said to my class of 6th graders, "One bird plus one bird is two birds," and they looked at me like I was crazy. I laughed to myself and knew they would never fully appreciate what those meant to me. Rest in peace! My thoughts are with you all.

How wonderful to see so many familiar names from CFCS expressing their thoughts and memories of Mr. Fetzko. I remember dreading Geometry in 1970, but Mr. Fetzko managed to pull me through with a passing grade. Have I forgotten everything about theorems? Absolutely! But I still remember Mr. Fetzko in the front of the room writing on the blackboard with such intensity that the chalk broke and flew around the room.
To Mrs. Fetzko and your family, please accept my sympathy and prayers.

When I think Of Mr. Fetzko I think of his sense of humor - he was always quick witted and made me laugh! I remember bus rides with the Ski Club - always a lot of fun and full of laughter, thanks to him! I also remember hearing him yelling down the hall in school - a voice you couldn't miss! He wasn't angry - but he sure did get your attention!! It's been a long time since I had him in school, but he's a teacher I will always remember fondly! My thoughts and prayers are with all of his family! May the wonderful memories you have of this wonderful man, ease your sorrow!

To the Fetzko family -

Reading all the "Fetz-isms" has brought a great smile to my face. One of my favorites was the old "One bird plus one bird is two birds - not Larry Bird!" A great teacher as well as a great Coach.

Playing on the 1987 team that made it to the State Championship game, to this day, is one of the best experiences I've ever had. In the classroom, or on the sideline, his loud, booming voice was truly one of a kind.

My thoughts are with the entire Fetzko family.

Mary Lou and family - please accept our deepest sympathies for your loss. The world will be a dimmer and much less colorful place without Ed. He was one of the first people to go out of his way to make me feel at home when I arrived at CF and one of the people to have the greatest and most lasting impact on me. The lessons I learned having him as a mentor, lessons about teaching, coaching and being an adult are ones that have helped shape who I am. His influence, and your families lasting influence affects our family on a daily basis. He was a good man and we will miss him dearly.

Mrs. Fetzko and Family,

It was always a great experience to have Mr. Fetzko as a teacher and he always kept the the classroom a dynamic environment, to say the least! Although I remember all the Fetzisms that make me laugh outloud, I remember the times I have seen him after graduation. He always had a smile with laughter in his voice that just made me feel so great. He's a great guy and will surely be missed by all. Prayers to your family.

To the Fetzko Family;

My condolences are with all of you at this difficult time. I have so many great memories from my time in the classroom with Fetz as well as from playing baseball for him. He was a great teacher and coach, but an even better man. I will never forget playing in the state championship game for him, but more than the game it was the heartfelt letter he wrote to me after expressing how much the trip meant to him and how we would remember it forever. Fetz always spoke from the heart and that is one of the qualities that made him a special person. I have become a math teacher and coach and still use some of the fetzisms with my students. Term into term and you will burn. When in doubt...factor out. Does that b-b-b-bother you? They look at me like I'm nuts. Just part of the legacy passed on by the Fetz. He will be greatly missed.

Coach Fetz
He was an amazing man that has created lots of stories from his uncanny way of words. We called them Fetzism in highschool. We counted 33 in highschool from "get out your Jersey Joe Calculators" "You fish" "When in doubt mash potatoes and sour croute" etc. He was was a very inspirationsl man that has helped me become a football coach and a teacher myself. Fetz will certainly be missed but lets cherish the memories that he has created with everyone that knew him.

Coach Fetzko was the greatest. When we played for Coach we learned to have fun but play to our upmost abilities. I will never forget his fur hat he wore to keep his ears warm, it became known as the Hunyak hat...and we were his fellow Hunyaks! Heaven now has a winning team as they will now have the BEST of Coaches. God Bless You, Coach Fetzko,,,you will be missed!

Fetz represented everything that we should be teaching today's youth about 'everyday heroes'. He was a man who was passionate about everything he did and who took great pride in his family. It is amazing how the word of his death got around. My daughter, who lives in Sydney, Australia rang me to tell me. As I sit here and read the entries, the tears are streaming down my face... first from laughing so hard because I remember every single little ditty Fetz would say (and I wish I could remember more of them) and then from the heartache for the loss of a great teacher, Chenango Forks coach, and friend. He was my teacher back in the 70's and my children's teacher in the 90's. In class, when there was always a certain one who needed assistance during a test, he would happen by their desk and give the most hilariously "big red truck" clues that if anyone who had half a brain could not get it wrong. My kids grew up and went to school with his kids, so we were now friends... Go figure. I would see Ed anywhere with that big smile on his face and he and I held that priceless bond of being fellow "Pollacks" and our greeting was always in Polish, something I will never forget and will always miss. The Fetzko family is blessed to have had such a character as their patriarch, and now as their guardian angel. My prayers and love will be with you all, though I know that the blessings that he left you will lift you the rest of the days till you are with him again. He is in heart forever, . Much love and prayers to you all! Odpoczywaja (pozostawac) w pokojowym moim przyjacielu! (Rest in peace my friend!)

I had to laugh as I read my sisters message, sent from Tampa. I too was asked to sit in the "peanut gallery". Ed Fetzko defined CFCS as a great place of education. How lucky we were to have been placed in his care. As members of his family, I can only imagine how blessed you are with memories. Peace be with you.

It was my good fortune, and great pleasure to have Fetz as a teacher and coach. As Tom points out, coach Fetzko was truly a pioneer of the Forks football tradition. Great teacher, great coach, great man. Thanks coach, and thanks to his family for sharing him with all of us. George Thomas

Sincere condolances to all of Ed's family and friends, he will be dearly missed.
Ed was my favorite coach and aguably my favorite teacher of all time. I'll never forget his references to the "A-Team", and how a mistake was referred to as a "Murdock." Without the Math I learned from him, I never would have been able to pass the qualifying exams for the Naval Nuclear Power Program. Great memories. Gone but NEVER forgotten.

Fetzko Family every student and player who knew Mr.Fetzko surely feels your loss. My favorite Fetzko-isms were "he who hesitates is lost" and "its a cake walk everybody wins"

“When in doubt – factor out!” I still believe in this crazy philosophy to this day! It wasn’t just about Math. It wasn’t just about Football. He taught us all about life. I will/do miss him. Again. As a long time fan of the old Susquenango League sports scene, I recall Coach Fetz from when Sidney and Forks matched up on the baseball diamond. His teams were fundamentally sound. Rivalries like that remain priceless, as you always respected the baseball program there.

It is clear that he had just as many memories created in the classroom as any sports venue. As an educator, he made a difference; so rare in this day and age.

Condolences to the family and Chenango Forks community.

He taught us all about life. I will/do miss him. Again. My teacher. My coach. My friend. And I would love to hear him call Jon Emm a “Honyack” one more time. He was a special man.

My thoughts and prayers are with the family members in their time of grief.
I have many fond memories of the "Fetzer" from the moment he moved into the CF district to start his teaching career. There were many many football games, golf matches, world series games ect but the most memorable time was a trip to California to the Rose Bowl game between Ohio State and Stanford. What a funfilled week. There were many more, too numerous to mention.
God rest his soul.

To the Fetzkos and his closest of friends,

I was saddened when Tom Hellerud emailed me last night informing me that Coach Fetzko had passed. He certainly is a legend on the grounds of CFCS. My thoughts are with all of you in this difficult time.

I never had him as a teacher, but I did play for one of his JV football teams in the early days of his career. While I too fondly remember a lot of Fetzko-isms and his coaching style, I only have one "Ed Fetzko story" that I can remember because it directly involves me. I ran into Coach Fetzko maybe five years ago when we both had appointments at a doctor we were both seeing that day, so we had a nice talk. I related my story to him and he actually remembered it because he finished the story before I had the chance! I am so glad I had that chance meeting with him that day.

Rest peacefully Coach Fetz

Mr. Fetzko was my favorite math teacher. To this day, I cannot listen to the theme from Beethoven's 5th Symphony without remembering his wacky way of teaching Trigonometry. Who else could make math so much fun? He will be missed.-- Jennifer James Wissink, CF Class of 1987

I am remembering and honoring Mr. Fetzko today. His quirky sense of humor made math fun...and to this day I am unable to see sauerkraut without saying out loud "factor out, sauerkraut and mashed potatoes". My husband and daughter think I'm NUTS! Thanks Mr. Fetzko. You touched and enriched my life. I am holding your family in my heart.

My fondest memory of Mr. Fetzko will always be that each and every time I asked a math question he'd smile, shake his head, and say "Markham, take a seat in the peanut gallery."

He was a great teacher and taught at a great high school~ My best to his family.

Dear Fetzko Family,
I am so sorry to hear about Mr. Fetzko's passing. I will never forget all that he taught me. About a week ago I was helping one of my students with math, we were both stuck until I yelled out, "when in doubt factor out, mashed potatoes and gravy!" I'll remember him fondly. He will be missed.

So many of us have known Mr. Fetz since we were little, just starting school. What a genuinely nice man... someone who was always there with a smile, always available when you needed him for anything, and ready to give you some Catholic guilt when you were tempted to blow off your math homework. He will be greatly missed.

So sad...Mr. Fetzko was my math teacher Junior year...although quadratic equations have been long forgotten, I've remembered his unique sense of humor all these years later. My deepest sympathies.

Hey MaryLou, Chris and the rest of the offspring Fetzers,

The world has lost one of a dying breed...teachers like Fetzer. He was one of us who embodied the love of being outrageous and effective and an individual who could get along with and love other people who were likewise individuals.

His love of teaching will always be remembered, especially his great use of playng cards in the classroom.
There is zero probability that another person like Fetz will ever come along.

Cherish the memories he gave you and the strengths he allowed all of you to express and be proud of.

Mr. Fetzko was my math teacher and JV football coach in the late '70's - before our first game he was trying to inspire us and started singing "We Are Family", which soon became our team motto. Who can forget math class with phrases like "Katie Bar the Door" or "Get out your green weenies" or the infamous song and dance for SOCCAHTOA! Mr. Fetzko inspired me both as an athlete and student and taught me leadership skills that have lasted a life time. You are a Forks legend Mr. Fetzko.

What a terrible loss to this world. Mr. Fetzko was an amazing teacher. I loved having him for math because there were always "Mickey Mouse" problems! And then there was "the final door"-which was the last time we'd walk out of his room before the Regents. Those days are memorable and I still talk about him to my son, who loves math as much as I did when I was taught by "Fetz". God Bless you Mr. Fetzko. You will definitely be missed!

There are a million "Fetzko-isms"

But my all time favorite that "I will always remember and never forget" is "Thou shall not, have a radical in the denominator, Dummy!"

See you on the other side Coach!

Mrs. Fetzko and family,

I can honestly say from the bottom of my heart,Mr. Fetzko was my favorite coach of all time at Chenango Forks. I have the deepst respect for all other coaches there, but Mr. Fetzko taught us a passion at an early level that carried us on throughout our years. To this day my family and in laws speak highly of him and the sayings he would teach us for math "SOCATOAH", "When in doubt, factor out saurkraut", "Kielbasa and beans", Waltz Me Matilda (a baseball pick off sign)" and my families favorite, his nickname for us "SHA.." He was a wonderful person and will be greatly missed but never forgotten. All the best to you and thank you for letting us enjoy Mr. Fetzko's teaching, coaching and personality.

To the Fetzko Family,
And by that, I mean family, friends and all those that Mr. Fetzko touched...I had the honor of being educated by, as well as playing ball for Mr. Fetzko. There are just too many FUN stories to go into. Although I will always remember making him a 'PB&J' ("with extra jam SHAW") during a 'card party' at my folks house one time. I'm sure he's already started his new 'coaching' assignment. My thoughts and prayers are with you at this most difficult time. God bless you all. Tom Shaul

I had the priviledge of having Ed (Mr. Fetzko) as both a teacher and coach. I have many fond memories of both. There are not enough people in the world like Ed. He was not only a teacher, mentor and coach, he was also a friend. He was one of my father's dearest friends and fellow baseball coach. I can remember him at our house when I was young and his booming voice. I can remember him dancing polkas at his wedding to Mary Lou. I had recently had a conversation with one of my closest friends who also played ball for Ed. We both have fond memories of "looks like we're going to have hot dogs and beans for dinner after the way we played" or "you guys are going to run 10 30s for that performance". We had several names for Ed including "Daddy Fetzko" and just "Dad". I guess when you look back at it, you don't just call anyone "dad". I had not seen him for many years and ran into him on the slopes at Greek Peak a couple years ago with Mary Lou. Though he had been battling illness, his ever present smile was unchanged. I can remember him saying "been up to the top yet"? Just like he did in ski club many years ago. Say hello to my dad for me, I'm sure that you found each other already and are having quite a discussion about the World Series in heaven. Thank you for your guidance and friendship. God Bless.

Coach Fetz started coach JV baseball about the time I starting umpiring. I did many of his games. I remember his
voice booming "hall drill" [what was that?] If I umpired on the softball field I could still hear him! My son,
Todd, played for Fetz on the team that went to the state final four in 1987.
A great experience. Our sincere condolences. Dick James
