Fay "Mac" McClelland, Jr.
of Holland, Pa.Fay "Mac" McClelland, Jr. died September 3, 2004. He had lived at Twining Village, Holland, Pa., for the last eight years and in Langhorne, Pa., for 29 years. He was a member of The Lutheran Church of God's Love in Newtown, Pa., and received the Support of Spiritual Aims Award by the Kiwanis Club of Council Rock in 1992. His career as a chemical engineer included employment at Dupont in Newark, N.J., IBM in Vestal, N.Y. and Stokes Molded Products in Trenton, N.J. He was an amateur musician, playing the French horn in the Triple Cities Community Symphony in Binghamton, N.Y., and in the IBM band. He sang in church choirs wherever he made his home. He and his wife opened their home to many people throughout their life, including exchange students from Germany, Greece and Brazil, and to others, both close to home and from distant places, who needed a temporary home. They shared their home in Nutley, New Jersey with three Latvian families during late 1949 and 1950 and their home in Vestal, New York with a German family in the mid-1950's. He was an active Boy Scout for much of his life, achieving Eagle Scout, the first of three generations to do so, and serving as a Scoutmaster in Vestal. He served on the school board in Vestal in the 1960's. He was a lifetime member of the American Chemical Society. He and his wife were active in Marriage Encounter. He started jogging in the early 1960's to stay in shape and was an avid recycler, before those activities became matters of national interest. Born on September 9, 1921, in Valentine, Nebraska, the eldest child of the late Fay and Lucille McElroy McClelland, he attended schools in Omaha, Nebraska and was a member of the St. John's Episcopal Church in Omaha. He graduated from Cornell University, where he met his wife, in 1944 with a degree in chemical engineering and served in the Navy at the end of World War II. He was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Phyllis Dittman McClelland, February 7, 2004 and by his brother, Don S. McClelland in 1997. He is survived by his children, Phyllis George and husband, Michael, Poughkeepsie, New York, D. Keith McClelland and wife, Janice, Knoxville, Tennesee, Lane I. McClelland, ret. Capt. US Coast Guard, Olney, Maryland, Ann Rise Kagan and husband, Benjamin, Kassel, Germany; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Jean Bosworth and husband, Kirk, Williston, Vermont and Wilma Soener, Papillion, Nebraska; sister-in-law, Mary Jane McClelland, Diamond Bar, California; and by numerous nieces and nephews.
A celebration of his life will be held at God's Love Lutheran Church, Newtown, Pa., on Saturday, September 11, 2004, at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers and for those wishing to make memorial donations in his memory, the family has suggested God's Love Lutheran Church Memorial Garden, Chandler Hall Hospice in Newtown, Pa., or the charity of your choice.
