James Oliva Obituary
Kirkwood: James J. Oliva, 88, of Kirkwood, passed away on Sunday, April 14, 2013, surrounded by his loving family. He was predeceased by his loving parents, Salvatore and Maria Oliva; father and mother-in-law, Mike and Lillie Pagano; beloved sister, Josephine Penna; and sister-in-law, Louise Gregus. James is survived by his loving wife of over 65 years, Antoinette (Ann) Oliva; five children and their spouses, Salvatore Oliva, Cathy Oliva, James Jr. and Melanie Oliva, Edward and LuAnn Oliva, Mary and Christopher Martinson, Michael and Karen Oliva; thirteen grandchildren and their spouses, Jada Oliva, Randy Oliva, Scott Oliva, Justin Oliva, Nicholas and Kaitlin Martinson, Daniel Martinson, Eric and Jessica Oliva, Jeff and Leah Oliva, Brittany (Chase) Oliva, Crystal Speer, Nathan Oliva, Lindsey Oliva; four great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews including two special nephews and their wives, Vincent and Carolyn Penna and Mike and Laura Gregus. James proudly served in the Army during WWII in the 299th Combat Engineers, who were one of the first to invade the beaches of Normandy on D-Day. He retired from the Binghamton City School District and was a member of the American Legion Post 82 in Endicott as well as the Sons of Italy and the Moose Club. The family would like to thank all the special angels at Willow Point Nursing Home South One for treating Jim with respect, dignity and for loving him. He truly loved you all back. The family will receive friends from 4-6 p.m. at Savage Funeral Home, Thursday, April, 18, 2013, 338 Conklin Ave, Binghamton, NY 13903 with Military Honors at 6 p.m. at the funeral home. There will be a Memorial Mass on Friday, April 19, 2013, at 9:30 a.m. at Ss. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church, 148 Clinton St., Binghamton. Burial will be in the family plot at Calvary Cemetery at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the charity of your choice and pass along an act of kindness and a good joke as Jim would have done. Your Dad was a very kind, caring man who was very, very proud of his family..esp. his grandkids...he never complained about being in the nursing home, he was a true Hero..now he is with God with no more pain..we will miss his smile and his humor..RIP Jim!

To the Family of Jim Oliva,
I have many fond memories of Jim as our custodian at Thomas Jefferson Elementary. He was always very kind to the children and more than willing to offer a hand to the teachers. I fondly remember him painting the murals in the cafeteria and the beautiful hot air balloons in the Grand Hall. That was quite the task! What an artist!! He was a good man. It is my sincere hope that you find comfort and peace in the days ahead.
