Jan Fish Obituary

JAN E. FISH, 74 BELOVED HUSBAND, FATHER AND GRANDPA BELVIDERE - Jan E. Fish, 74, of Belvidere passed away Thursday, Aug. 7, 2008, in his home surrounded by his loving family after a courageous battle with cancer. Born Dec. 27, 1933, in Janesville, Wis., the son of Ray C. Fish Sr. and Thelma Jean VanAntwerp. He graduated from Belvidere High School in 1952, and worked at AandP Grocery before serving in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1953 to 1955. Married Bonnie James on Sept. 14, 1953, in Belvidere, in St. James Church. Jan was employed at the Belvidere Bank from 1955 to 1967. In 1967, he started his own decorating business which he operated for 30 years. He was commissioner of the Belvidere Park District from 1965 to 1977 and managed the Belvidere Park concession stand for several years. His hobbies included gardening, fishing, hunting and golfing. He and his wife, Bonnie, enjoyed winters in Florida when they retired and loved spending time with grandchildren. Survived by wife of 54 years, Bonnie; daughter, Kathy Holliday of Rockford; sons, Michael (Susan) of Thibodaux of La., John (Susan) of Belvidere, Stephen (Corey) of Chicago; and grandchildren, Christopher, Leah, Julia, Jessica, Katherine and Kelsey. Predeceased by parents; sons, David and Thomas; brother, Ray C. Fish Jr.; and sister, Barbara Haffenden. Special thanks to OSF Cancer Center staff and OSF Hospice for their wonderful care. Also to our family, friends and neighbors who were so helpful and supportive. Jan enjoyed all your visits and appreciated your prayers. Service at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 11, in St. James Catholic Church, 514 Caswell St., with the Rev. Brian A. Geary officiating. Interment in St. James Catholic Cemetery. Visitation from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 10, in Belvidere Funeral Home, 203 Logan Ave. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to OSF Hospice or St. James Church.

Uncle Jan was my favorite uncle. He always had a twinkle in his eye, a spring in his step and a funny quip or joke. It was obvious to all that Uncle Jan very much loved life and his family.

I regret that due to our residence overseas, my children did not have the opportunity to spend more time and get to know Uncle Jan as I did. Saying this, my son Brett and I were fortunate to have spent some time with Uncle Jan a few months ago on a trip home from Guam.

Uncle Jan is in a better place now, away from pain and suffering and no doubt, telling few jokes that no one in heaven has ever heard!

We love you Uncle Jan and Aunt Bonnie and family, our prayers are with you. We will miss Uncle Jan always.

My family and I are saddened by the news of my uncle Jan passing! Our hearts and prayers go out to Aunt Bonnie and all of her family members! I saw uncle Jan last at the Fish Reunion and I'm so glad I was able to spend time visiting with him..I won't forget that beautiful face and big warm smile! He will be sadley missed and warmly remembered by me and my whole family!
