Joanne Burr Obituary

Joanne Burr

Brackney, PA - Joanne Burr, 69, of Brackney, PA, by way of Johnson City, NY, lost her courageous battle with cancer on April 12th, 2019. She was pre-deceased by her parents, Aldo & Claudia Bernardo and in-laws Charlie and Marian Burr as well as her sister in law, Nancy Bernardo.

Joanne is survived by her loving husband of 47 years, C. Clark Burr; Children, Chuck (Joy) Burr of Binghamton, NY, and Adele (Jamie) League of Charlotte, NC; 4 Grandchildren, Jacob League, MaresaBurr, Brianna League and Charlie Burr; Brother, Don Bernardo and Sister, Adele (Bill) Boyle; Brother in law, Melvin (Donna) Burr and Sister in law, Cheryl Burr, and Step Mother, Reta Bernardo. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Joanne graduated from Johnson City High School, where she was known for her love of music. She attended SUNY Cobleskill and worked for Montgomery Ward until she became owner of The Window and Door Store, of Vestal, NY. "Gibby", as she was known as to her family and friends, possessed a genuine and giving spirit, and a gift of bringing people together. She was truly blessed to be surrounded by many caring and loving friends, many of whom she considered family. She was a lover of all 4 seasons, but especially enjoyed her lifetime of summers at Laurel Lake, PA where she and Clark eventually retired and built their year-round dream home.Although she participated in activities such as boating and water skiing, her true joy was teaching and sharing those experiences with so many others. She also embraced the winter months snowmobiling in Old Forge, NY, helping create great memories and traditions for 3 generations of a special group of families. She loved reading romance novels, was an avid golfer and will forever be remembered as a connoisseur of fine "box" wine.

The family would like to offer a special thank you to those who cared for Joanne throughout her final weeks, preparing her and her family for the next step in her journey to be by God's side.

The family will receive friends at St James Church to celebrate Joanne's life on Monday, May 6th from 10-11:30 am, with a funeral mass to immediately follow.

Arrangements are by The Mikeska Funeral Home, 161 Clinton Street. Binghamton, New York.

In lieu of flowers, a donation to St. James Church or to Mercy House in Joanne's name would be appreciated.

I was one of her many satisfied customers at the Window & Door Store. She made the trip to my home to aid in selecting just the perfect storm doors and bow window. Whenever I was in the Vestal area I would stop in with treats for her dog and we would sit and chat.
I often think of her and her kindness especially when I gaze out my bow window. I will remember her fondly. A great lady.

My sister Joanne faught cancer with the same determination she was known for. She faught with grace and positivity. She was a wonderful wife, daughter, sister, mother, aunt, friend and neighbor. She was best know as Gibby by her grandchildren, who met every summer at "Camp Gibby" on Laurel Lake. She shared her giving spirit with them and everyone she met. Although we will miss her, we know she is in the loving arms of God and all those who she loved who had passed before her. Rest in peace my sister...my hero.
