Uncle Joe, my always uncle. Always there for a family function, always there to inquire about all his nephews and nieces, always there to give advice about military matters. The Miramonte Lodge rug that he spent all one winter making is one of our cherished possessions and is very sentimental to my family. He set the bar high and we dearly miss him. This past Christmas Break, I had the privilege of visiting Grandpa Joe at Parkplace. His mind seemed just as sharp and his gregarious personality just as warm as in years past. As always, I left the visit completely humbled from being in the presence of such an extraordinary person. Spending time with Grandpa Joe is truly a transforming experience. I have never met someone with such a wealth of knowledge and experiences to share. Grandpa Joe's wisdom has always provided a crooked angle from which to view life. In a sense, he challenged me to live a more examined life that involved questioning what was accepted or what was conventional by society's standards. From his advice, he would essentially drive home this key question that he believed every individual should ask him or herself: Why live life content on mediocrity when one could truly be extraordinary? Grandpa Joe has truly lived a life that was just that: extraordinary. I can only imagine the hundreds if not thousands of people that he has impacted and inspired along the way. The more I reflect upon the type of legacy Grandpa Joe has left behind, the more I recognize how fortunate I am for having the opportunity to be spend some time with him. In a world as chaotic as ours, it could truly use more great men like Grandpa Joe to provide the much needed, common-sense advice that often times gets lost in the fray. Grandpa Joe, you will be dearly missed.

Dear Peter and Family, my sincere condolences. Peter I am so sorry for your lost, I know how close you and your dad were. Peter I was your job coach for many years from Sheltered Workshop. I still have the Irish Flag and other Irish items you and Dad had given to me. The Irish Flag is flying outside of my home at this time. I always remember you and your dad at this time when I take the flag out for St. Patricks Day. This flag will now fly in memory of your dad. You are in my thoughts Peter,
Sincerely, Judy Matthews

Dr. K. was an amazing example of what it means to be a teacher. He was never 'off' the teacher's podium. Thousands of students are better for having known him, both in and out of the classroom. I always enjoyed listening to him talk, both as a student and later as a colleague at UEHS. He was a natural. Tough but gentle. The world is a better place because he was part of it.

"Uncle" Joe grew up with my parents Joe and Edith Missavage in the first ward in Binghamton sharing a strong Lithuanian heritage and remained a close family friend for decades. Our family admired him for his humor, intelligence, compassion, resilience, caring for others and the love he showed for his wife and sons. Regardless of the task, Joe could be counted on to help. He was a role model in education and served many years in the army reserves with my dad and husband. Without him I would never have passed my geometry regents exam. Holidays and special occasions at our home were always made more enjoyable when Joe's wit and wisdom were present. Joe was a truely remarkable man who made valuable contributions while he was with us. Our sincere condolences and love to his family.

Dr. K was my chemistry teacher at UE and was key to my decision to continue in the field ofchemistry. His leadership in the classroom influemced my style of teaching, later in my life. I will always remember him as a gifted and talented teacher who truly enjoyed and showed his passion for education. My condolences to his family. Bob Lord

Joseph Kazlauskas was an old family friend of my parents and I remember his visits well as a little girl back in the 1950's. I can still see him entertaining my sister and me by rolling up a section of newspaper, cutting it here and there in strips and magically pulling it up in a fashion to make a beanstalk for Jack, of Jack in the Beanstalk to climb. He told us that story and with the animation had us mesmerized. This was 60 years ago and I still remember that experience well. One Christmas we heard a minor explosion in the basement of our home in J.C. My sister had received a chemistry set and Mr. K was helping her with an experiment. Two examples of the memories adults can leave behind for children, regardless of the decades gone by. May he rest in peace. In caring and sharing...

Once in a while, if you are lucky, in a brief instant you might meet someone so rare and so special that, despite time and distance, they make a lasting impression in your mind and on your heart. Such a man was Grandpa Joe. With our love and sympathy.

I remember Dr. K as an enthusiastic and kind substitute teacher during the late 1980s when I was a student. He was our long term sub for a month at JFS, and I enjoyed having the chance to learn from him. Years later when I became a teacher, I learned more about his background and had a newer appreciation for his modesty in spite of such extraordinary experiences. My thoughts and prayers are with his family at this time. I will fondly remember him and will think of him often throughout the days ahead. Rest in peace!
Warm regards,
.

Joe was also principal of Binghamton High
for a period of time. He was always spirited and totally involved with whatever endeaver in which he was working.
He counseled me to continue my military career. Without his urging and advice I would not have completed the goal that I set out to accomplish several years ago.
