Leon J. Goldstein
of Binghamton
Leon J. Goldstein, 75, passed away unexpectedly, Friday, May 24, 2002, at Wilson Memorial Hospital. He is survived by his loving wife, Claire and beloved children, daughter, Adina and husband, David Samson, Efrat, Israel; and son, Dani Goldstein and wife, Jennie, Brooklyn, N.Y. He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren, Tamar, Sarah, Mira, Natan and Noam Samson and Ephraim, Nachum and Temima Goldstein; also surviving are his sister, Arlene and husband, Henry Rosenblatt, Del Ray Beach, Fla.; brother, Dr. Edwin Goldstein and wife, Sorie, Riverdale, N.Y.; aunt, Elizabeth Blackman, North Miami Beach, Fla.; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. He was born and raised in Brooklyn and served in the United States Army. He graduated from Brooklyn College and in 1954; he received his PhD from Yale University. He was Professor of Philosophy at Binghamton University for 39 years. He was the editor of the journal, International Studies in Philosophy and was the author of Politics in a Pluralist Democracy (with Lucy S. Dawidowicz), Historical Knowing. The What and Why of History, Thinking about Social Science and Conceptual Tension (in progress). He also published numerous articles and book reviews. He was a member of The American Philosophical Association, The American Anthropological Association, The Hegel Society of America, and The R.G. Collingwood Society. He served as Past President of Beth David Synagogue, Past Chairman of the Board of Education for Hillel Academy of Broome County and was Honorary Vice President of Hillel. Funeral services will be held Monday, May 27, 12:00 Noon at Beth David Synagogue, 39 Riverside Dr., Binghamton, with Rabbi Shmuel Landesman, officiating. Interment will follow services at Beth David Cemetery, Conklin Rd., Conklin. Shiva will be observed at the Goldstein residence, 11 Oak Street, Binghamton, N.Y. 13905. Arrangements handled by the DeMunn Funeral Home.
