Matthew Cunningham Obituary
Johnson City - Matthew Aaron Cunningham, Chief Gas Fitter and long-time resident of Johnson City, NY passed away on December 24, 2020 at age 59 at Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse NY.
Matt was born in Binghamton NY on April 29, 1961 to Moses and Lucille Cunningham. He is survived by his loving wife, Kim Avery Cunningham, his daughter, Kylee and son, Avery; his brothers, Moses Cunningham, Michael Cunningham, Mark Cunningham and sister-in-law Margie Cunningham; brother and sister-in-law, Kirk and Kathy Avery; nephews and nieces, Trey, Derek, Amy, Casandra, David, Amaris, Jonathan; father and mother-in-law, Gary and Jan Avery; and many cousins and wonderful friends. Matt worked for Columbia Gas for 4 years and NYSEG for 30+ years. He was a dedicated loyal employee who gave his all to his customers with a smile on his face. Matt also partnered with his best friend Brian Johnson with their company Projected Events. Matt was a loving caring husband and father. He enjoyed snowmobiling, boating and spending time with family and friends. Matt thoroughly enjoyed watching sports but his personal enjoyment was watching his children play volleyball, basketball and football. In addition, Matt was involved in coaching at BCC and Johnson City for basketball, baseball, football and softball. He positively impacted numerous kids during basketball season as well as during volleyball season and in return was well respected by all. Matt was extremely passionate in all aspects of life, and he always remained positive through all of the health challenges he faced. He loved music and had a beautiful voice. Anyone that knew Matt could always call to receive his "handyman" skills when in need. He had a great sense of humor with a quick smile and hardy laugh for those around him. Matt could even be counted on to bust out a jig in the kitchen to lighten things up.
Due to current times, a private immediate family service is scheduled. Pastor David McKinney and Elder Mark Cunningham will officiate. Arrangements made by MIKESKA FUNERAL HOME, 161 Clinton St. Binghamton, NY.

It's so very hard to believe that it's been 4 years. I know that Matt and I hadn't seen each other in years, but he made such a huge impact in my life in our earlier years. At a recent class reunion/get together Matt's name came up in many conversations, always with laughter and love for the time that we cherished with him.
To his wife and children, I am so very sorry that you are having to adjust to a different life than you ever expected. My prayers are with you always.

This was my main road dog back in our early to late teenage years EVERY Passover...
We stuck together everyday of the whole week or two, everyday, like my father and his father did without any problems...
Matt was probably my first real friend I hung out with on the land in Belleville...
He moved on in life and we never saw each other again physically...
But when we connected again on fb some 40 years later, I was so glad to touch base with him again and he told me he was too...
He sent me pictures of his wife and family, and I sent him pictures of me and my wife and family...
Laughing and reminiscing at where we were then in our wild crazy days, to where we were now...
I missed him then, and when I found out he was sick, but still looking healthy, I thought we would meet up again, before we leave this world...

Cunningham Family: I am sorry to hear of Matt's passing. I remember Matt from HS. He was a few years behind me but was very involved with our basketball team and a joy to be around. Even though a few years younger than me, he was more mature, intelligent and caring than most of us. Since I moved away after college, I had not seen or heard from him in over 40 years but he reached out to me on Facebook a few years back. Once connected, I could witness from a distance his love of family. His involvement in his community, friends and his battle with his health. The best neighbor, a great friend. Watched him volunteer to coach several youth sports programs. If he didn't know much about a particular sport he asked questions and did the absolute best he could.
