Meg Hilton Obituary

Meg (Margaret) Hilton

We are sorry to announce to her many friends in Binghamton the death of Meg (Margaret) Hilton in Seattle, WA. Meg was born in England and came to the US in the early 1960's with her family. She was married to Peter Hilton, the distinguished mathematician. They settled in Binghamton when Peter took a position at Binghamton University. Meg graduated from The Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts (RADA) in London and had a successful career as a stage actor, as well as some television guest roles. In 1978 she was awarded the Clarence Derwent Award for most promising female actor on Broadway after her performance in the play Molly. She appeared at New York's Longacre Theatre in 1985 in the play A Day in the Death of Joe Egg, which ran for 93 performances. She was active for many years in Repertory Theatre, notably at Longwharf in New Haven, CT. Guest parts on television included Law & Order in 1990 as an English button shop owner. Here in the Triple Cities, we were lucky enough to see her perform at The Cider Mill. Amongst other productions, her performance in Samuel Beckett's Happy Days was a triumph, her bright blue eyes shining out above the rising heap of mud in which her character spent her days. After her retirement she was a frequent participant of Lyceum classes where her beautiful readings and deep understanding of poetry, and of Shakespeare, made her a popular class leader. Meg was predeceased by her husband Peter and son Nicholas. She is survived by her son Tim (Cate) Hilton, Seattle, (WA), her grandsons Jake Hilton (WA) and Kris Hilton (SC), and her great-granddaughter Sarah Hilton (SC).

We hope to have a celebration of Meg's life when we are able to gather in sufficient numbers, probably in 2021.

Donations in Meg's memory may be made to the World Wildlife Fund, of which she was a lifelong supporter.

Meg Hilton enriched so many lives with her wit, huge talent and infectious, cunning humor. Her love ran deep for nature and all animals & her family & friends. I had the honor of working with her at the Asolo Theatre in Sarasota, FL. We remained longtime friends. I’ll miss her so much. Rest dear friend. The Universe has a new star!
