A man who saw something in each individual student . Mr. R is only one of 2 I know of , his friends and co-workers bragged about and he said little of his own achievement . precious memories of a man taking each student aside and chatting , teaching , one to one , teaching how to be an adult .
he had pet-names for each of us ; part of our character he saw and brought out . he wasnt just teaching ; he was living a dream it seemed . Often a first glimpse of true "Love of Life & Living" . thank you .

Coach was a key part of an institution at Vestal that will long be remembered. He inspired, he disiplined, he motivated, and he moved. All with a very personal touch. He mentored young athletes to grow the inner strength to succeed in sport and hopefully in life. I'm grateful that he pushed me then. Thanks Coach!! My condolences to his family and the entire community.

I have fond memories growing up next to Mr. Rotondi! All the Rotondi's had a special place in my heart. Even though I left nearly 30 years ago, I enjoyed keeping in touch at Christmas cards and IF I ever came thru Vestal, I ALWAYS stopped to visit them. It was like a second home being at their house, always welcoming, always interested a big heart! When ever I heard the Saying, you make a better door than a window, I would think of him. When i watched Friday Night lights football..I would think of him.... When ever I saw a BMW, I would think of him and his car! When ever I see spanish rice or home made pizza, I think of Mrs. Rotondi. So many memories..... Thank you! You guys were like a second home. You have no idea how much an impact you had on me. You may be dead, but rest assure you will not be forgotten! My thoughts are with you all, I am so sorry that I didn't see this sooner, I would have loved to have come pay my respects in person.

In each of us there is something special. We can choose to share it or hide it. Mr. Rotondi was a sharer. He gave of himself in the way he treated people. He recongized in each of us what our special abilities were. Then without even realizing it we were sharing, and learning, and teaching, and growing. I am a better person because I was lucky enough to have had Mr. Rotondi in my life.

What a wonderful, wonderful guy Mike was.. Knowing him as a neighbor and family friend at Oak Hill Ave and laughing at his jokes through the years. He always brought a smile to your face. And Connie, his "Beloved" was truly his beloved... Things will be lonely without him here ,but know that he was welcomed in heaven by his mother and father and all his friends.
His memory will always be in all of our hearts...with a smile....

Coach was a true icon of what it meant to grow up in vestal! His passing marks the end of an era in vestal that will never likely be achieved again. He will always be "Iron Mike" to the Salamida brothers, Dom and Paul, UE class of '60 and '61. He was so pleased with his new Mercedes sedan, that he "forced" us to wash and wax the car on delivery. The family may never know all of the people he touched in his life. He knew we had lost our father at a very young age, and he used that stern exterior to coach at every oppertunity, often giving us a ride home to the North Side of Endicott. A brief encounter, a lifetime of memory.
In deepest sympathy,

Dear Aunt Connie, Bernie, Nick, Michael-John, Lisa, What a loving, close, caring family you are. My heart goes out to you especially, Aunt Connie, having Uncle Mike at your side for 57 years. When I was a little girl at our family gatherings, Uncle Mike used to scare me with his big booming voice. I realized as I grew older to enjoy the love that radiated from his unique sense of humor. When I married Jimmy, Uncle Mike's favorite phrase was "The Greek". Bet you already have a track team assembled in heaven Uncle Mike!

In 1959 at George W. Johnson Elementary on Endicott's northside we got word that we were getting a new gym teacher, he was fresh from Germany and he was a tough drill sergeant. The word was that he was a strict guy and don't cross him. We learned quickly that he was a strict type guy and he also brought a great deal of fun when you dealt with him. Five years later some of us had to meet with Mr. Rotundi again in the old UE "Pitt", the original gym at UE High School, for our first session with our freshman football coach and he had a problem. Mr. Rotundi had 120 9th graders that wanted to play for him. He said he couldn't keep that many and he would have to wittle that number down to around 60. There would be an A team and a B team; the B team would play smaller schools. He also said that the next three days would be the most difficult ever for many of us because of his conditioning structure. He said that if we weren't the best team we would be in the best shape and our injuries would be few. He was very tough and football practice had no right to be that much fun. The team went undefeated and unscored upon until we had Vestal 28-0 late in the fourth quarter when half the lights there went off and they scored 6 points. He had a patented move for this situation; he threw his baseball cap to the turf and looked up to the heavans for about five seconds. There was probably more but I remember one player who sustained a sprained ankle during that season. Over the years I would run into him here and there and even as an adult I could never address him other than Mr. Rotundi. I'm sure Heaven will appreciate this great man.

Coach Rotondi was one of my favorites at VHS. I transferred to VHS during 10/65. Michael was always one of the most upbeat people there. He sized me up by squeezing my arm and said "football". I wasn't so good at that but had more success in throwing discus with him looking over my shoulder always. He had the greatest stories about coaching track and the loudest coaching voice--when he needed it. I was always motivated when Coach Rotondi was around. I have always cherished many warm thoughts about him in my years since graduating in 68 and always will. My deepest condolences to his family.

Aunt Connie, Nick, Bernie, Michael John, Lisa and family,
I was very saddened when my Mom and Dad called me to tell me that Uncle Mike, my Godfather, had passed away. As anyone who ever met him knows, he was a very unique person who possessed a wicked sense of humor, passion for the good things in life, and deep love and caring for all of his friends and especially his family.
I truly cannot think of a single time when I saw Uncle Mike that he did not both make me laugh and make me feel good about who I was as a person. When he asked you how you were doing, he really wanted to know and you always had a sense that he was really cheering for you.
I will forever hold him dear to my heart and know that his spirit will be with all of us who were lucky enough to have known him.
With much love,

"My Grandpa was the best Grandpa in the whole wide world." That is what I thought when I was little, and as I grew up, I realized just how true that was. My Pop was my bestfriend, and I was his best girlfriend, little did I know that I was one of the many "main squeeze's" in his life. He would take me everywhere with him. Wherever we went, people knew my grandpa. He always had a nickname for anyone we ran into. I called him Pop, others called him Roto, maybe coach, fuzz, or Dad. We all knew him as loving, caring, funny, warm hearrted, and one of a kind. Something else we all share is the love for Michael Rotondi, and the love we received from him in return. I promise anyone that met him never was be littled or angered by his words. No one has a bad thought or memory about Michael. In honor of his memory, lets all try to live just a little like Michael Rotondi. If we all took something from him, we all would be better, happier people, and the world would truely be a better place. Thank you Pop for being such a wonderful man. I will love and miss you forever. Your number one girlfriend and granddaughter. Kellie Musa

To the entire Rotondi family....Please accept my deepest condolences. Roto was truly one of my heroes as a young man and I always tried to be the kind of teacher and coach that he was for me and so many others. He epitomized all that a young man growing up stood for. He was always fair, tough...yet with a gentle spirit and a quick smile....and respected by everyone who knew him. Over the years I knew him as a friend of my dads, my track and football coach, a wonderful grandpa for Kellie and as a friend. He will be missed greatly.....he was truly one of the great ones. What a wonderful man Mike was and always had a special way to remember others. I remember as a sixth grade student of his ,he posted the Geo. W. All Star Basketball team on the gym door. Not being that good I was anxious to see if I made the final 12.Going down the list my name was not there and the final name was"All Star".A bit disappointed later that morning in gym class we lined up and he looked at me and said"congratulations All Star".I was the happiest kid in the world. We only played Geo. H. Nichols and I scored a basket in the game.Coach Rotundi for the next 50 years, and I kid you not, called me "All Star"every time he saw me as we got to be good friends. He loved his Family and forever loved the North Side of Endicott where he grew up and to always see him with his friends and Family was always a joy.He never lost his roots and loved his Vestal bond as well. God Bless you Mike Rotundi, you were a true Northsider,a friend to all who knew you,and a loving husband,Father,Brother and Coach to the max and the best to all around you.I and so many will miss you and will always remember you....from your "All Star"

Rest In Peace to a wonderful man who loved his family and the kids he taught, and who loved Vestal and all it had to offer. Vestal Football never had a more devoted member of the coaching staff. God Bless you Mr. Rotondi. Tim Traver and family.
